We've been witnessing a recent flood of Gingerbread updates for Android handsets still on Froyo, most recently with the Samsung Droid Charge beginning to receive its yesterday. It looks like Samsung is holding on to that momentum, as signs now point to the Fascinate on Verizon to be among the next handsets chosen to make the upgrade. As Fascinate owners must be all-too aware, this update's been a long time coming. There have been leaked in-development Gingerbread releases showing up since late spring, always making us think an official release might be soon to follow, but never quite ...

The Verizon Fascinate was the last Samsung Galaxy S variant to hit the U.S. market and so far the carrier is doing its best to keep the phone up to date with software updates, even though some of them introduced problems for some users. Apparently, as of this week, Verizon is listing the phone with a "retired" label. Looking at the screen capture above you'll see the red watermark embedded all over the device page. It says the phone is retired and thus it has already been removed from the carrier's online store. Given the popularity of the Galaxy S and its variants, it's just normal that ...

The last update released for the Samsung Fascinate on Verizon, software revision ED04, mainly looked like it was to prepare the smartphone for future updates, but it did promise one immediately-available feature: that it would improve incoming call connectivity. Apparently Samsung missed the mark a bit, because rather than make things better, ED04 managed to break incoming calls altogether for some users. Rumors were spreading late last night that Verizon was taking the issue so seriously that it was offering to replace affected Fascinates for a more modern smartphone like the Droid X2. ...

Whether you're a new smartphone user or an experienced one you most definitely heard, seen or experienced a bricked device. It's a state in which your phone gets once all those flashes and hacks you apply go wrong. Sometimes you can recover but sometimes you just get an expensive paper weight. One-click Unbrick is an application which promises to restore your bricked Galaxy S smartphone (or variant) as easy as clicking a button. The application is advertised to be compatible with all Samsung devices which use Odin and runs on Linux, Windows and Macs. To see the list of instructions and ...

Samsung Fascinate update ED04, which dropped a couple weeks back, was kind of a let-down feature-wise, especially with Fascinate owners already craving Gingerbread after getting Froyo just two months ago. Now, we still don't know when you might expect an official update ready for OTA distribution, but an early build of Gingerbread for the Fascinate has leaked. You'll need to use Samsung's Odin tool to flash the leaked ROM to your phone, after which you can root system via a few ADB commands. Fascinate owners who have had the chance to run the ROM note that it's more or less working, though ...

Earlier this year Apple considered that Samsung is ripping it off by copying its iPhone design and applying it to a couple of its own smartphones. Cupertino claimed to take a look at Samsung's upcoming models and the Korean company instantly responded demanding the same, plus adding in a couple of patents to raise the stakes. If the original complaint referred to designs of the Samsung Captivate, Continuum, Vibrant, Galaxy S 4G, Epic 4G, Indulge, Mesmerize, Showcase, Fascinate, Nexus S, Gem, Transform, Intercept, and Acclaim smartphones, Apple has amended it to add an additional eleven ...

Hot on the heels of yesterday's Droid Charge update, Samsung and Verizon continue to push new firmware out to their customers, releasing system software i500.ED04 for the Samsung Fascinate. The Charge's update was pretty decent, fixing one big annoying, function-robbing bug, in addition to several smaller ones and providing some performance boosts. We wish the Fascinate was getting something nearly as interesting, but this ED04 release seems more meta than anything: one of the main purposes for this release is to patch the phone so that future update installation is improved. An update ...

Last year's Samsung Galaxy S series of Androids is about to get a shot in the arm, thanks to the the development efforts of the coders working on CyanogenMod. While experimental builds of the custom ROM replacement have existed for the Galaxy S and its carrier-branded cousins, the smartphone hasn't been officially supported by the project. Now it looks like that will finally be changing, starting with AT&T's Captivate getting its first official CyanogenMod nightlies. These nightly builds mark the Captivate's progress towards a stable CM7 release. It won't be making that journey alone, with ...

If you've set your mind on shopping for a new smartphone this weekend you're lucky because Best Buy announced its offer for free smartphones this Friday and Saturday. You can grab either the Samsung Fascinate on Verizon, BlackBerry Curve 3G on Sprint or Samsung Captivate on AT&T, for free, as part of the promotion bringing back the "Free Phone Friday" and extending it an extra day. The free phones still require new or upgrade activation with two-year agreement on their respective carriers but two Galaxy S variants for free -- not to mention the Curve 3G -- are some great free options. ...

Samsung recently released the source code for Froyo on its Fascinate, in advance of the actual update arriving. Sure, we've seen some leaked builds come out, with various degrees of polish, but there's yet to be any sort of OTA update sent out over Verizon. That wait's just about over, with Verizon planning to start pushing the update out tomorrow. The update will bring Fascinate models up to software revision 1500.ED01 - the same version reflected in the source code Samsung published. As we mentioned when looking over that release, this all is a bit of a mixed bag; sure, Fascinate owners ...

Several Froyo ROM builds have been leaked for the Verizon Fascinate, the carrier version of the Samsung Galaxy S, but now an ED01 version of the source code has been made public by the manufacturer itself. It's somehow sad that we're talking Google Android 2.2.1 Froyo for a Galaxy S when some regions in Europe are already getting Android 2.3.3 via KIES software but better later than never, especially with carrier models. What this new build of Froyo source code means is that you're getting closer to the day you've been waiting for on one hand and on the other developers will be able to ...

Canadian smartphone users who are looking to pick up a new model are in for a treat, since Telus has slashed prices on many of it popular models, offering most for free when you sign-on for a three-year term. While some of the newest models, like the HTC Desire HD, will still set you back $50, the vast majority are available at no cost after subsidies. Android smartphones that are free with this offer include the original HTC Desire, the LG Optimus One, the Droid-like Motorola Milestone, Samsung's Fascinate, and the Motorola Charm. Some, like the Charm, stuck on Android 2.1, are clearly ...

If you're one of the many still eagerly awaiting Android 2.2 Froyo for your Verizon Samsung Fascinate, you're in good company. Last week "DL30", a Froyo ROM for the Fascinate was leaked. Now another ROM, "EB01", is making it's rounds. Before we get into what this ROM includes, it's worth noting that in one week we've seen two progressively better builds of Froyo for the Fascinate. This leads us to believe that not only is progress being made toward a final release, but that quite a bit of attention is being paid to actually realizing Froyo on the Fascinate. According to the source, this ...

Sprint's been advising users of Samsung's Epic 4G to keep their patience as the carrier puts the phone's Android 2.2 upgrade through extensive testing before certifying it for release. The company may be wrapping things up, as rumors indicate that the official Froyo update will go out in about two weeks, on February 21. A tipster has provided Android Central with an image of the WiMAX phone running a copy of Froyo build EA17, which he identifies as the final revision which will ultimately go out to Sprint users. We've been waiting for Android 2.2 to come along for months now, after a ...

Yes, it's another attempt to get Froyo on a Samsung Galaxy S device, this time it's coming to Verizon's Fascinate. The "official DL30 build" has been leaked, pre-rooted, and packaged up into an update that's flashable via ClockworkMod Recovery. Other than that, the ROM has all the Verizon and Samsung "bloatware included, unedited, and unchanged". To flash it you'll have to have rooted your phone and installed ClockworkMod Recovery, but it will work with either the DJ05 or DL09 radios, which should make your life a little earlier. If you're interested in making the non-supported jump to the ...
