Motorola's RAZR brand may have started out life as an iconic dumbphone, but 2011 saw the brand reincarnated as an Android smartphone, the Droid RAZR. One year later, we got the RAZR HD (not to mention the Maxx), but then last year the RAZR name appeared to be dropped in favor of the Droid Ultra. Is that all she wrote for the RAZR's lineage? Before we call that book closed, we're checking out a new benchmark entry for an unknown Motorola handset, which may just be the next phone to take on the RAZR name. Over on GFXBench we see a listing for Motorola's XT912A. With a Snapdragon 800, ...

Everybody loves getting an Android update; they remind us that our phones aren't yet completely out-of-date, and that our manufacturer and carrier have at least some passing interest in keeping us happy. We get to check out the latest Android features that it seems like everyone else has been enjoying for six months, and briefly feel like we have a modern handset again. That's all fine for what it is, but with so many phones out there tasked to get their updates, it's difficult for us to get very excited about any one in particular. At least, that's usually the case, but the new update ...

Cyber Monday Update: We mentioned quite a few Cyber Monday deals last week, like AT&T's basically free-on-contract HTC One X (sadly, not plus) or Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. Beyond that GS2, Samsung's got a few additional offers mentioned on its Facebook page, including savings on a second Samsung device when you buy one through AT&T, and don't forget that those Samsung T-Mobile deals we talked about are still good, including a $100 16GB Galaxy S III. Thanksgiving is now upon us, for those of you living in the US, at least, while for today that means turkey, uncomfortable ...

Yesterday we showed you the initial unboxing of the Motorola Droid RAZR HD. Since then I got a little curious: how can you tell a RAZR HD apart from the original Droid RAZR, and what are the differences? Good thing I just happen to have one of each! To begin with, both the RAZR HD and the RAZR have the "RAZR" trademark look and feel. They both have a soft-touch Kevlar backplate and both have the beveled corners that are synonymous with the RAZR family. On the front, the RAZR HD sheds its capacitive buttons in favor of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on-screen soft-keys. The Motorola ...

As Motorola users are all too aware, while the company does an admirable job of trying to let users know about the Android update situation for each of its models, it has a nasty habit of going back on previous plans to bring updates to certain models. As such, whenever the company gets around to updating that list, we find ourselves walking on eggshells. So, what's the news today? This update focuses on plans for Jelly Bean upgrades. To that end, Motorola lists a dozen models that it currently plans to bring Android 4.1 to. Some of the devices listed have ETAs attached to them; the three ...

Smartphone manufacturers sure don't seem to trust users with their own phones. It took months and months (and months) of arm-twisting before Motorola finally made a tool available to allow owners of its newest devices to choose to unlock their bootloaders; even then, owners of older models were left in the dust. While that's certainly a victory, it seems that Motorola is finding even more ways to annoy phone modders, upon the introduction of new software that detects root. You'll find this code in the Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx. If you boot into recovery ...

The Motorola RAZR HD has been very active posing for the camera recently. As with the case of the RAZR and the RAZR MAXX, with its extra large battery, the RAZR HD is expected to have a slightly fatter twin, the RAZR MAXX HD. According to recent reports, both HD follow-ups to the RAZR and RAZR MAXX are likely to be announced in October. However, the report is very thin and goes on mentioning that even this October timeframe, hinted by "sources", is not set in stone: it may all depend on how well the current RAZR and RAZR MAXX devices perform on the market until that likely announcement ...

Motorola's Atrix HD may be the company's newest high-end Android, but there's been another waiting in the wings for some time now, bringing HD graphics to the company's RAZR series. The Droid RAZR HD should be coming soon to Verizon, as we've already had the chance to see some pics of the handset all decked-out with its Verizon badging and even saw the model turn up in some new Cellebrite software. We're still waiting for word on just when it will launch, but Verizon subscribers won't be the only ones who get a shot at this phone, as Motorola should also be releasing an international ...

Recently Verizon and Motorola pushed forth an OTA update to Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX devices to bring them from Android 2.3 Gingerbread to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. And with it, users can enjoy a less intrusive version of Motorola's MotoBlur interface. Android ICS fanatics will be excited to know that the browser, app drawer, and launcher (for the most part) have remained stock giving users the look and feel of unadulterated Android 4.0. That said, there is a fair amount of lag when going back to the homescreen and when browsing the web. Hopefully the Android community will ...

Last we heard about the official Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Veriz0n Motorola Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX, it was with the occasion the carrier sent out notifications to users that the refresh is going to land soon, without giving out specific details or an ETA. However, both the Motorola and the Verizon websites seem to indicate that the update is a go. As you can check for yourselves at the source links below, you can see introductions to Android 4.0, instructions as well as descriptions of what you can expect. There is no official wording (yet) in the shape of a press release ...

Tired of rumors about the upcoming release of Ice Cream Sandwich for Motorola's Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx? Us, too; there have been tons of predictions for just when the update might see the light of day, as well as Motorola's word to go on that the phones would see the update arrive before the end of this quarter. If you were worrying that Verizon might not live up to that deadline, worry not, as new signs from the carrier itself indicate that ICS for the RAZR is just about to drop. Last we heard, June 12 was looking like a possible start date for ICS OTA distribution, but that clearly ...

Maybe it's just due to the overwhelming effect the Galaxy S III has had on smartphone news over the past month or two, but it seems like Motorola's Droid RAZR HD has been very stealthy about its progress towards arrival on the scene, dropping signs of its presence here and there, but not really making a big splash yet. We've seen the model appear in recent Cellebrite data, suggesting it's well on its way to landing at Verizon, but have yet to get a really good look at the phone. Today we have a new pair of pictures to check out, showing what appears to be the RAZR HD as it will come to ...

Motorola's set the clock ticking on the arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx on Verizon, claiming that distribution of the updates will commence before the end of the quarter. With June now in full swing, there's less and less time left for Motorola to make good on its word; just when could we hope to see ICS arrive? While Verizon's yet to publicly confirm any distribution schedule for the phones, CNET is now reporting that a Verizon source has revealed that the plan is to begin RAZR ICS distribution in one week, on June 12. If we're to believe what this ...

Over the past several months, we've been hearing rumors about a new version of Motorola's Droid RAZR destined for Verizon. First tipped as the Droid Fighter, this model would supposedly closely mirror some of the Chinese-only RAZR-like models we learned of last fall, with thirteen-megapixel cameras and 720p displays. While we've seen references to this so-called RAZR HD in EXIF data, there's been very little in the way of evidence confirming the handset's coming arrival. Today we get a bit more information along those lines, with the RAZR HD showing-up in the latest data set from ...

We've reached that point, folks. The battle for the title of "world's slimmest smartphone" is down to fights over hundredths of a millimeter- the internationally-recognized sign of a fight no one cares about anymore. In the past six months, phone makers Motorola, Huawei, and Oppo have all made the "thinnest" claim at some point. Today, Huawei's Ascend P1 S is still lording the lofty title of most-svelte over its rivals, with a thickness measurement of 6.68mm. That's just a little ways from the DROID RAZR's 7.1mm, but a far cry from the 13.9mm original RAZR that kicked off this whole ...

Verizon started-off the week by confirming the upcoming arrival of updates for the Droid 4, RAZR, RAZR Maxx, and Rezound that would allow those phones to roam internationally on GSM/UMTS networks, despite their CDMA pedigree. We'll be seeing those updates come out sometime this summer (with a good chance that global roaming and Ice Cream Sandwich will arrive simultaneously for at least some of the models), but if just the news of this forthcoming feature has you thinking about picking up one of the models early, Amazon Wireless has some pretty nice deals ready for you. Subscribers signing ...

Yesterday, we saw Verizon clear up a few things about upcoming updates for some of its Android lineup that would bring these CDMA phones the ability to roam globally on GSM-based networks. All told, the carrier committed to getting this feature out to the Droid 4, RAZR, RAZR Maxx, and Rezound sometime over the summer. Today we get a hint of just how this roaming might arrive, thanks to a recently-leaked ICS ROM for the Droid RAZR. While it's not clear exactly what software build we're looking at here, the takeaway seems to be that the update that will enable global roaming will likely be ...

Late last week, we started hearing some new rumblings about Verizon's plans for bringing global roaming to some of its Android lineup. We already knew that both the Motorola Droid 4 and LG's Spectrum would make the cut, and Verizon would activate their roaming abilities at some point in the future. The new leak that brought the issue back to the forefront last week concerned HTC's Rezound, with an in-store display advertising the pending arrival of global roaming as one of the handset's features. There were also rumors accompanying that find that Motorola's Droid RAZR (Maxx) would join ...

Signs started emerging late last year that Verizon was planning on bringing global roaming capabilities to a couple of its then-upcoming LTE-enabled smartphones. It wasn't long after that when a Verizon representative confirmed plans to bring just such a feature to a selection of the carrier's Androids. These phones wouldn't arrive with global roaming enabled, but the feature would be delivered at some point in the future – it seemed at the time like it might be closer to the end of Q2. It looks like Verizon could be nearly ready to flip that switch, as retail locations are updating ...

Motorola has a fantasist list available for users who are interested in learning when Ice Cream Sandwich should be coming to their smartphone or tablet. Two months ago, we saw the company update that list with its latest data, advising that the international RAZR would be seeing ICS arrive sometime in Q2 2012. We already knew that ICS was a lock for the Droid RAZR on Verizon, as the carrier had published its own list of confirmed ICS updates just a few days prior. On Motorola's list, though, progress on that update was marked as still being in its "Evaluation & Planning" stage, without ...

A little earlier this week we got to see a leak that seemed to reveal the coming arrival of a new color variant for the Motorola Droid RAZR, with a blue version of the handset tipped to launch on May 17. It seemed a little odd to be hearing about a new color option this long after the phone's initial launch, but it sounded good all the same; the more choices, the better. Today that new blue model gets officially confirmed by Verizon, and we get to see a new leak that hints at a nice price break on the horizon for the RAZR Maxx. It turns out that you may be able to get the blue RAZR even ...

So far, if you've wanted a Motorola Droid RAZR,you've had the option of the standard black model, as well as both purple and white variants. Sure, Verizon employees could get a special edition of the phone with red accents, but as far as readily-available choices go, we're left with really just three color options. We keep hearing rumors about a new HD RAZR that may be about to drop, and who knows what colors that handset will come in, but in the interim it looks like there's one more color choice for the original Droid RAZR about to make its debut, with a leak showing the Android ...

Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs have been leaking for the Droid RAZR for months now, and ever since March we've seen a real uptick in rumors about soak tests and possible scheduling for the official update to finally arrive. It's not here quite yet, but a newly-leaked ROM may just represent the final update, as it will go out OTA. Earlier this week, a Verizon doc surfaced which showed the carrier's expectations for the distribution of ICS updates to a couple phones. For the RAZR and the RAZR Maxx, the document indicates Verizon's already involved with testing the update, and that it could start ...

It sounds like we're going to be getting another variant of the Motorola Droid RAZR, already available as the original model and the extended battery-life RAZR Maxx. This next RAZR would supposedly offer users a 720p display, instead of the qHD screen on existing models. There have been several names attributed to this rumored handset, including the RAZR HD and the Droid Fighter. Today, we've got some new imagery to look at that may show some Motorola hardware that reflects the same changes that we'll be seeing in the Droid RAZR HD. The phone we're looking at here is Motorola model MT887, ...

We first heard of the 6.12.181 update for the Verizon Motorola Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX at the beginning of April but shortly after rumor had it the manufacturer was dropping the refresh in favor on a possible Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich soak test. It seems that either the reports were faulty or Motorola changed its mind because the full changelog for the upcoming 6.12.181 refresh has been made public. It will be applicable to both the Droid RAZR and the RAZR MAXX and it will bring, as usual, bugfixes, improved battery life, accurate 4G indicator plus the rest which could be ...
