HTC’s been talking about which of its Androids would be seeing updates to Ice Cream Sandwich for some time now, so we’ve generally had a good idea for what to expect. We’ve already seen the company start delivering those updates to some of its lineup, leaving the question of just when it would get around to hitting the rest of them. To help with answers, the manufacturer has put together a convenient table, detailing just when it expects to make ICS available for those remaining devices.
It looks like the majority of phones that haven’t yet started [...]
As we start to get into mid-February, there are probably a lot of you out there wondering where all the Ice Cream Sandwich updates for your existing Android phones are. After all, weren’t we hoping to see these releases really start arriving in early 2012? The good news is that the wait is nearly over, at least for some HTC users. The smartphone manufacturer posted a message to Facebook this morning talking about plans for the delivery of its first Ice Cream Sandwich updates in March.
We already knew about HTC’s plans to start selling phones running Android 4.0 in [...]
Besides “don’t download apps from sketchy sources”, one of the big rules of keeping your Android device safe is “think carefully about approving app requests for system permissions”. That latter one can be tricky to encourage, since it requires the user to do a bit of critical thinking at the time of installation; does that Sudoku-solving app you downloaded really need the ability to send SMS messages? The idea is, though, that if you are smart about granting permissions, you can stop malicious apps from taking advantage of you. Sometimes it’s not [...]
HTC Android fans who are into some serious phone customization are coming home to some good news tonight, with HTC releasing the kernel source code to over half-a-dozen devices. The arrival of these code bases means that you might hope to see some new custom ROMs start arriving in the coming weeks. Just what models are covered?
First up, we’ve got the HTC Vivid, which came to AT&T early last month. Next we have the Salsa, one of the two HTC models featuring a hardware Facebook button (alongside the ChaCha). Both the original Incredible and its follow-up, the [...]
After unleashing the Android 2.3.5 with HTC Sense 3.0 update to Desire S phones at the very beginning of October and giving out the source code recently, HTC just tweeted about another over-the-air update to hit European Desire S devices.
There’s not much information about the refresh but given the size of the update as well as reports from those that got it, it appears to be a bugfix / performance enhancement update. At 6.79MB it’s just normal for this to be HTC ironing out a couple of glitches with the main platform they released at the beginning of last month. You [...]
The Taiwanese phone maker recently announced that it officially released the Kernel source code for four additional devices. These are the recently announced HTC Rezound, HTC Explorer (Pico), HTC Desire S and the HTC Amaze (4G).
Source codes are always fund and incredibly useful as they not only allow users to take a look under the hood and report any bugs they might find but even give developers and chefs a chance to either extract goodies or use the bits to create custom ROMs for devices. If you’re interested in either of the above, follow the source link to grab the new [...]
The HTC Desire S was launched at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and shipped with Gingerbread 2.3.3 out of the box. An over-the-air update is reportedly rolling-out, bumping the version to Gingerbread 2.3.5
Devices reported to receive the update reside in the U.K. and have generic stock ROMs. The new version of the operating system also brings the new HTC Sense to the phone, in its version 3.0 iteration. As with every ROM update that is happening over the air, this one is rolling out in stages too. Let us know if you’ve got the refresh (and where you [...]
Looks like there has been quite a lot of activity in CyanogenMOD-land recently. After announcing the CyanogenMOD ROM for the LG Optimus 7 back at the end of July and teasing it at the beginning of August, the team announced that there’s an “early CM7 build for the LG Optimus 3D” available.
Additionally, users of the HTC Saga (aka HTC Desire S) have one more reason to rediscover their phones. The first CyanogenMOD Nightly build is out and if you feel brave enough you can give it a go, granted you understand the risks involved and that you’re likely to run [...]
Thanks to some talented folks over at XDA Developers, if you’ve got an unlocked HTC Desire HD, Desire S, or Inspire you now have a custom ROM that will bring not only Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, but also HTC Sense UI 3.5 to your smartphone!
Based on the HTC Runnymede‘s ROM, these ROMs are pretty complete with few known bugs.

If a leaked U.S. Cellular rebate form previously tipped on the HTC Desire II and Wildfire S, among others, coming to the carrier, the entire Q3-Q4 line-up has been recently leaked and made public.
The image with the two phones above is just part of the leak AndroidCentral published and it includes some interesting phones. First we have the Motorola Electrify, your Motorola Photon, with its dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 4.3-inch qHD display, eight-megapixel camera and Android 2.3, allegedly coming October. Next up is the LG Optimus Black and its ultra-bright “NOVA” [...]
A month ago U.S. Cellular told the world about its plans to bring seven Android phones and one Windows Phone to its line-up this year. From these, three will be made by HTC and if we take the one Taiwanese Windows Phone out there are only two HTC Android phones left.
According to the image above — which is really a leaked U.S. Cellular rebate form — we know that the carrier is preparing the HTC Desire II and the HTC Wildfire S. The Desire II is really the Desire S, follow-up to the popular HTC Desire, with a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 768MB of RAM, 1.1GB of ROM, and a [...]
HTC seems to be able to account for an excellent first quarter of 2011 with record high quarterly revenues of NT$104.16bn ($3.63 billion) and net profits of NT$14.83bn ($517.21 million).
Additionally, HTC reportedly sold 9.7 million smartphones in the first quarter of 2011, which is 192% more than it did in the first quarter of 2010. Compared to the last quarter, Q4 of 2010, HTC sold 6% more and the higher numbers are mainly due to the growing demand for Android-powered smartphones.
Exceptional Q1 numbers are also due to smartphones just released, the Inspire 4G, [...]
After HTC unified back in January all HTC Android smartphones in terms of the HTC Sync software with version 3.0.5511, the harmony has been once again disturbed with the Taiwanese manufacturer releasing HTC Sync version 3.0.5517 for HTC Incredible S and HTC Desire S.
HTC Sync allows you to sync your Outlook contacts and calendar or Outlook Express contacts as well as your browser favorites from your computer to your Android smartphone. It also enables you to install Android applications as well as sync pictures, videos, documents, music, and playlists. If you have an HTC [...]

When evaluating smartphones one of the items we like to cover is the quality of the video camera. The camera in the HTC Desire S is not only 720p, it’s also very fast! Still images don’t suffer from “shutter lag” like we’ve seen in earlier phones, and the video it records is just stunning!
A good, quality video recording has good resolution, good color contrast, and can track well without blurring when moved quickly or shooting fast-motion action. Audio quality is also important to a good recording.
That having been said, let’s take a [...]
The latest version of the HTC Sense interface for Android, version 3.0, brings some pretty significant changes and will debut on the EVO 3D and the Sensation. Chief among these changes are a new lock screen, new widgets, a new home screen configuration, and many little enhancements to the stock programs you use everyday. If you’re rocking a current generation phone like the Desire HD (Inspire 4G), EVO 4G, Thunderbolt, or even the brand new Incredible S, you’re probably wondering whether you’ll get an upgrade to Sense 3.0. First, a bit of history.
Most of the [...]
In our last post we unboxed the HTC Desire S. In this video we’ll take a look at the first boot and see the general responsiveness of the smartphone.
This cellphone is running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread with HTC Sense UI 2.1. The new version of Sense UI comes with a quick settings tab and recently used apps, in addition to notifications in the pull-down notification shade. The app drawer has three views (all apps, frequently used apps, and downloaded apps) and a cool, vertically paginated view to help navigate a long list of apps. Integration with HTCSense.com is [...]
The HTC 7 Pro is known as the HTC Arrive in the US thanks to Sprint — as well as its CDMA support — and the device looks to be landing soon at Cellular South together with the HTC Desire II — basically the Desire S — and the Wildifre S.
The information comes from a screen grab of what looks to be the carrier’s system in which the three devices are listed. Calling the Desire S the Desire II is nothing out of the ordinary — just remember the HTC Incredible S is called the Incredible II with Verizon — which makes us wonder why the Wildfire [...]
Thanks to our friends at Negri Electronics we got our hands on the HTC Desire S. An Android-powered smartphone running HTC Sense UI, and targeting the European market.
In this video I’ll show you what comes in the box, and give you a quick tour or the device itself. We’ll cover first-boot and software in an upcoming video.
Inside the box is what you’d expect: some manuals, a wall-wart for USB-power (sporting European prongs), a stereo headset, a USB cable, and the phone itself.
The smartphone feels very substantial in-hand, though [...]
If you are an HTC Desire S owner today might be your lucky day as HTC has just released the source code for the smartphone on its developer website.
If you are a ROM developer that means you can get your hands dirty and check out the bits released. If you are a poweruser addicted to tweaking, hacking and improving, you know it’s one step towards another custom ROM for your device — or even for another non-Desire S. Even if you’re not into that, you could see improvements as people check out every bit and report bugs which could be fixed for your [...]
We’ve just spotted a new color option for the HTC Desire S, scheduled for release in Europe at the end of the month. While the smartphone has only popped up in black (or rather, “Muted Black”) so far, getmobile.de is offering an alternate facade for the handset in “Kodiak Gray”.
While the phone’s bezel may go unchanged, having that lighter color on the smartphone’s edge may actually improve visibility a tiny, tiny bit, thinking along the same lines as the Kindle 3’s re-coloring in order to increase the perception of screen [...]
The FCC continues to make this a busy week for smartphone fans, publishing more RF testing results for some upcoming handsets. Today we’ve got a new HTC model, number PG88100, which we understand to be the Desire S.
HTC announced the Desire S at last month’s MWC, playing the role of successor to the original Desire with some upgraded hardware specs. The phone is already up for pre-orders in Europe, expected to arrive at the end of March.
Japanese site Blog of Mobile!! identified the PG88100 as the Desire S. Looking through the FCC documents, you’ll [...]
HTC have launched a total number of five devices with the occasion of this year’s Mobile World Congress and, while they didn’t unveil anything huge, the Taiwanese manufacturer was the only one to present such a huge portfolio of new devices.
Our friends over at Clove.co.uk already have the HTC Desire S on pre-order. The handset will cost you £406.80 (approximately $659) unlocked and the first stock is expected to arrive early April. The device sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor, 768MB of RAM, 1.1GB of ROM, 3.7-inch WVGA screen, five-megapixel camera and a [...]
