It’s a sad day for owners of T-Mobile’s Motorola CLIQ XT. According to Motorola’s support forums, they’ve been working on getting Android 2.1 running on the aging smartphone, but they have finally thrown in the towel.

Motorola’s CLIQ XT, CLIQ, and Backflip all came pre-installed with Android 1.5. That’s not terribly out of the ordinary given when they were initially released (just after the T-Mobile G1).
What is unusual is that although many phones from that era have already been updated to Android 1.6, or even Android 2.2, the CLIQ XT, is still stuck at Android 1.5. What’s more, there are two versions of the CLIQ XT: one for T-Mobile, and the other sold under the Wal-Mart brand. T-Mobile still appears poised to release a followup to the Motorola Cliq, despite the so-called Cliq 2’s rumored release date of November 1st having come and gone. The brand name “Cliq 2” has just been published for opposition by the US Patent and Trademark Office, which is the final step before an official mark is issued.
