Acer showed off the Iconia Tab A700 at CES yesterday, destined to compete with the Asus Transformer Prime. However, Asus didn’t come empty-handed as they took the wraps off of the Transformer Prime TF700T, and improved model over the one which just recently went on sale.
The new Transformer Prime TF700T brings a new 1080p-capable, 1920 x 1200 Super IPS+ display (instead of 1280 x 800), a two-megapixel front-facer (opposed to the 1.3-megapixel on the older model), and a redesigned back panel in order to improve WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS connectivity. The processor is still [...]
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is hitting Verizon to take advantage of LTE speeds. The tablet is only measuring 7.9 mm in thickness making it a very attractive slate.
We’ve got our hands on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and found that the Super AMOLED Plus screen is beautiful and the build quality makes the tablet feel sturdy. Weighing under three-quarters of a pound, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is powered by a dual-core 1.4GHz processor, has 16GB of internal storage, a three-megapixel main camera, two-megapixel webcam and an LTE-compatible radio.
Early this morning, we showed you some of the Android tablets going up for display at this year’s CES. There were some pretty remarkable models among the selection, including some new quad-core devices. Samsung and Verizon have just announced their latest tablet offering, the extra-thin Galaxy Tab 7.7.
While the “7.7” figure is supposed to refer to the size in inches of the tablet’s 1280 x 800 display, it very nearly doubles as claim to the tablet’s thinness; in reality, the device is just a smidge too thick, at 7.9 millimeters. While that misses [...]
Even though CES officially starts off on the 10th, tomorrow, companies are eager to announce their products. Lenovo, the Chinese multi-national company, just launched a pair of Androids: one smartphone and one tablet.
The Lenovo S2 smartphone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with a “unique Kernel-level security system to protect personal data, prevent phishing, and control network and SMS traffic”. It packs a 1.4GHz single-core processor, either 512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage or 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, 3.8-inch WVGA display, eight-megapixel [...]
Sprint appears poised to be the second US carrier to offer the Motorola Xoom Android Honeycomb tablet, with accessories starting to appear for the 10.1-inch, 1280×800 slate. In fact, the accessory pictured above is said to be the same protective case whose existence was tipped by BGR earlier this week. According to reports from that site, the initial Sprint Xoom will only sport Wi-Fi, with WiMax support not coming until an unknown future date. That would match the pattern of the Verizon Xoom rollout, wherein high-speed LTE data won’t be available until well after launch. [...]
With the occasion of announcing several laptops and ultrabooks at CES, Acer also brought to the stage a brand new tablet which will be known as the Acer Iconia Tab A700. The Asus Transformer Prime is no longer the only one out there with nVidia’s Tegra 3 quad-core CPU.
According to reports, the Acer Iconia Tab A700 will be powered by the 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 SoC and sport a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The 9.8mm thick housing is also home to usual suspects like WiFi, Bluetooth, microSD card slot, and HDMI port.
Expect the Acer [...]
The slimmed-down ten-inch tablet from Toshiba which we’ve seen around Christmas time turned out to be the final design for the Toshiba AT200. The manufacturer just announced that it will arrive to the U.S. as the Excite X10, running Honeycomb but being Ice Cream Sandwich-ready.
The specs, as we’ve already seen, are a step forward from the Thrive. Packing a 1.2GHz TI OMAP4430 processor, the Excite X10 will operate with the help of a full gigabyte of RAM, and display images on the 10.1-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. There’s a combo of a [...]
CES is not only about Android-powered tablets, even though there seems to be a cornucopia of new devices being announced and the show hasn’t even started. Gigabyte brought its new S1081 slate to Las Vegas and this one is running Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system.
It packs a 10.1-inch screen and the processing power comes from the new Intel Atom Cedar Trail platform, “which delivers fantastic energy efficient performance that is great for mobile multitasking”. Say goodbye to 16GB, 32GB and 64GB internal storage as the S1081 features a 500GB HDD. For [...]
The Asus Padfone, introduced by the manufacturer at the end of May, was initially tipped for an MWC 2012 official launch but now, thanks to Asus itself, we have an official confirmation.
Whether you’ll want to buy the Padfone or not is completely up to you. The concept of a smartphone docking deep inside a tablet is appealing and innovative by itself, as are specs like the rumored quad-core nVidia Tegra 3 SoC. At the ongoing CES, Asus confirmed, despite having a prototype on display, that the Padfone will be officially unveiled at MWC in Barcelona at the end of February. [...]
Lenovo was showing off their latest tablet, the IdeaPad S2110, at CES. It’s an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet which is not unlike the Asus Tranformer in its ability to dock into a keyboard. When docked, the IdeaPad can run for 20 hours before needing to charge. The dock also provides a touchpad which will support multi-touch. Inside it has a Qualcomm 8x60A/8960 1.5GHz dual-core CPU. There’s a 5MP camera on the back with a single flash which is surrounded by a soft plastic finish, which will be available in multiple colors. No word on pricing, but look for it in June [...]
Until Samsung and Apple settle their differences regarding the thinnest device among the Galaxy S II and the iPhone, Huawei is stepping in at CES to unveil the world’s thinnest smartphone.
6.68 mm! Yes, thinner than seven millimeters is how thick the Huawei Ascend P1 S is. As for the specs, it’s also one of the fastest in its class. Check it out: 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display with qHD 960 x 540 resolution, dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 Cortext-A9 CPU clocking at 1.5 GHz and supported by the PowerVR SGX 540 GPU, and powering it all is Android 4.x Ice Cream [...]
Back in the “good ol’ days” of computers, processor speeds were measured in Megahertz. CPUs from different manufacturers could be compared with one another, and newer CPUs could be compared to older ones.
The MegaHertz Myth
Today Megahertz has given way to Gigahertz, and single cores are giving way to multiple cores. To complicate things, CPU’s do so much more than they did in the past, some even being called a “system on a chip” (or “SoC” for short, but more on that in a moment). These SoC’s might include CPU, memory [...]
For all the benefits smartphones have brought us, there’s no denying that they, and cellphones in general, have had some negative impact on manners and propriety. Many people no longer think twice about checking-out at a grocery store while on a call the entire time, perhaps not even saying a word to the cashier directly. For some of us, these kind of lapses mean we forget that our phones’ speakerphones are for use in private, and not for broadcasting both sides of our conversations to the general public just because we don’t feel like holding the phone to our ear. If [...]
The Sony Xperia S is bound to be a flagship phone in 2012: it features a slender, handsome design, it packs a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, plus it also has Sony’s first 720p Reality Display for a phone. The Xperia S will ship with Gingerbread, but will get an ICS upgrade in early Q2.
Our friends at Clove now have information relating to the price and ship date of the Xperia S. According to them, it will be available around March 5, and will be priced at £389.99 or around $600. The unlocked GSM phone will be Europe-only, meaning it won’t have [...]
Intel has not only decided to finally take the mobile device market seriously, but they’ve just shown us how quick they can be in providing us with results. Just a couple of days ago Intel confirmed that they would be launching a Smartphone with their Intel Atom Z2460, but to our surprise, their launch partner was no longer LG but instead Lenovo with their announcement of the K800 Smartphone.
There are two key reasons why you’ll want to consider an Intel smartphone in the future. First of all, it’s battery life. The device seems to handle complicated processes [...]
After a couple of roller coaster days in Las Vegas trying to bring you all the hottest devices that the industry has to offer, we’re signing off and giving you a full wrap-up of what was good, and what simply didn’t make the cut. It’s clear that Android will continue to grow, and we’re glad that Windows Phone is also taking great measures to provide users with the relevance and services that they need, but sadly there were things that we liked and things we thought could improve about this event. Watch our full re-cap of the top players and the top [...]
The anticipation was pretty big and so was the buzz around the Nokia Lumia 900 which finally made its way, at least on paper, to AT&T’s 4G LTE Windows Phone line-up. The device will be available later this year with the carrier.
The looks should be familiar: the “head-turning” design is the one used on the N9 and Lumia 800 as well. We got our hands on the Lumia 900 at CES which, inside its polycarbonate housing, packs a 1.4GHz Qualcomm APQ8055 + MDM9200 (WCDMA) combo, 512 MB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage out of which 14.5GB usable, 4.3-inch AMOLED [...]
If you’re a Windows Phone fan, you may have noticed that there’s not much love coming out of Sprint. Right now, the only smartphone on the platform offered by the carrier is the HTC Arrive – hardly a rich selection of models. David Owens, Sprint VP of product realization, recently discussed some of the carrier’s future plans, and touched on its dissatisfaction with Windows Phone.
Owens points to a lack of user enthusiasm for the platform, noting in reference to sales of the Arrive, “the number-one reason the product was returned was the user [...]
Yesterday we took a look at the Polaroid SC1630, a digital camera with a big optical zoom and Android running at its core. There are plenty of other non-smartphone gadgets being demonstrated at the CES this year that come very close to being one, often lacking only a cellular radio. The latest we’ve heard about is the Philips GoGear Connect 3.5, a Gingerbread-running media player.
Philips has been producing the GoGear line for some time now; we first looked at the family when GoGear was still running Android 2.1 back in 2010. There have been several iterations since then, [...]
At CES 2012, Verizon announced two new LTE smartphones: the LG Spectrum and the Motorola Droid 4. The Spectrum, in particular, has a 4.5″ 720p HD display and a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 CPU with 1GB of RAM. In many ways, it’s essentially the same phone as the LG Nitro HD on AT&T. It’s thin and light with a fingerprint-prone smooth backing. While the Spectrum comes with Android 2.3, expect an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich in Q2. The Spectrum will be available on January 19th for $199.
The Droid 4 is the one to get if you want a hardware [...]
The LG Viper are the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, announced at CES 2012, are the first Sprint LTE devices. The LG Viper is an Android 2.3 device, which will be upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich. Running with no custom UI, the Viper is somewhat of a midrange phone with a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU, a 4.0″ WVGA Nova display, a 5MP camera on the back, VGA camera up front, and an NFC chip with Google Wallet preloaded. The Viper is a bit thick, though the in-hand feel is nice with a brushed metal texture on the back. No word on price and availability.
The Galaxy Nexus is nearly [...]
We meet the Sony Xperia Ion, a device which is “first” from a couple of perspectives: it’s the first Sony device to come sans the “Ericsson” in its branding, though the device we got our hands on still uses the old Sony Ericsson logo, unlike the official AT&T phone render. It is also the first device from the manufacturer to include a 4G LTE radio.
The Sony Xperia Ion packs a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 4.6-inch 720p display, and a twelve-megapixel camera. While you’re waiting for the second quarter of the year, when it hits [...]
Not only the new HTC Titan II has 4G LTE support for Windows Phone but the phone has a huge 16-megapixel camera, largest among Windows Phones as well as among all HTC devices to date.
Peter Chou went on stage at the AT&T event to personally announce the Titan refresh and we were there to get our hands on the device. The 4.7-inch WVGA screen, inherited in size from its predecessor, looks really good and the phone is “boom-boom” fast as the HTC CEO described it. Fast not only due to the 4G LTE radio but also because of the 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S2 processor; other [...]
