As smaller tablets like the Nexus 7 and the iPad mini have gained traction, we knew it was only a matter of time before these became a more popular breed among different platforms and OEMs. Microsoft's answer to this new market is Windows 8.1, though Redmond's strategy was to bring us more powerful tablets by allowing us to use a full desktop operating system on an 8-inch tablet. Both Dell and Toshiba have pioneered this market with their inexpensive offerings late last year, but none of these companies offered us a really powerful business tablet, as Lenovo claims to do so with their ...

Just a couple of days ago one of the biggest rumors we heard from CES was that Google was teaming-up with Audi to bring us the first Android-equippeed vehicle in the industry. As it turns out, the rumors were true, but there was more than just one carmaker interested in the new approach towards bringing Android to our means of transportation. Google has now joined forces with Audi, Honda, GM and Hyundai to form the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA), which closely resembles the Open Handset Alliance that was formed almost half a decade ago for the creation and adoption of the Android OS that ...

CES is just days away. Tony is already on the ground in Las Vegas, and Michael and I will hit the ground running Sunday afternoon. Apart from all the other trade shows each year, CES is a unique beast. This year, there are over 3,200 exhibitors spread out over a 1.9 million square foot show floor. We can't even begin to wrap our heads around how incredibly large the show is, displaying everything from upcoming car technology to smarter toothbrushes and thousands of things you never knew you wanted. We've already covered what to expect for the show. But how in the world do you prepare for ...

Technology trade shows are often a breeding ground for plague and disease, so here at Pocketnow we opted to inoculate ourselves early … by picking up some crazy wintertime head colds just days before flying to Vegas for the 2014 International CES. That's right: on the first podcast of the year, all three of your humble hosts are suffering from respiratory distress and an overabundance of mucus, all of it glazed over with enough combined medication to drop a Snapdragon dead in its tracks. Or something. On the brighter side, in addition to being bastions of bacteria, trade shows like ...

We end today's show talking about the HTC M8, which is the successor to the HTC One, and the rumors of interchangeable lenses coming with the phone. All this and more after the break. Right now, we're in that nebulous pre-CES period, where while the show hasn't technically kicked-off just yet, manufacturers are itching to get their new products out on display and into the public eye. For several of them, that's meant not waiting until CES 2014 is underway in full swing, and making some of their announcements a little early; we've already gotten such looks from companies like Archos, Lenovo, and ZTE, and even Samsung got started a little prematurely with news of the Galaxy Camera 2. But make no mistake: in spite of the news that's come our way already, there's still ...

CES 2014 is just around the bend. Anton D. Nagy, Michael Fisher and yours truly will be in attendance, and coverage will begin shortly after we land in Las Vegas Sunday afternoon. This particular show has been growing in size and attendance almost every year since its induction in 1967. But for us mobile guys, the show has become far more sparse with juicy details and big product announcements. It's far too easy for a major device to get lost in the mass of new announcements at a show like CES. As such, companies like Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and have taken to one-off events to announce ...

Last year, the team behind Pebble took to the stage at the CES to announce the first shipments of their smartwatch, going out that month. Over the year that's followed, we've seen Pebble rise to the top of the smartwatch mountain – it may not be the most feature-rich smartwatch around, but it hits the ball out of the park when it comes to compatibility and battery life. More recently, we've learned of increasingly ambitious plans for the smartwatch, like the arrival of an app store sometime early this year. Now our sights are set on this coming Monday, as Pebble teases “something ...

Archos got us started with announcements of CES products super early, and we brought you news of all its Connected Home and Connected Self stuff – including a smartwatch – back at the start of the week. Today we see it follow those up with a couple new smartphones, and at least one of them might be worth giving a second look. The two are the Archos 50 and 45 Helium 4G, both running the same Snapdragon 400 you'll find in the Moto G, but at a slightly higher 1.4GHz clock. The 50 has a five-inch 720p display, 8GB storage, and an 8-megapixel camera with 2-megapixel front-facer. The 45, on ...

ZTE is one of those manufacturers that sees quite strong sales on a global level, but fails to really assert itself in our minds as a smartphone heavyweight. Still, we've been paying more attention to it lately, going hands-on with the Nubia 5, and hearing about some of the rumored next steps for the company, like its own smartwatch. With CES at the front of everyone's minds, companies are getting early starts on announcing their new lineups, and today ZTE shares its CES roster, including that rumored smartwatch. The ZTE BlueWatch will integrate a pedometer and connect over Bluetooth, and ...

2013 brought us a new Nexus smartphone, and a new Nexus 7, but no new Nexus 10. For a while there we were bouncing around the possibility of seeing a new one, either another Samsung model or maybe even something from ASUS, but we rounded-out the year empty handed. Could that Nexus 10 refresh still be in our future? One rumor says “yes,” and suggests that its debut might be mere days away, with Google and Samsung showing the device off at the CES. This account is seriously short on details, but it does offer one compelling spec: that the new Nexus 10 might upgrade to an OLED display. ...

As we were rounding-out last month, an unexpected follow-up to an unusual Android arrived on the fringes of our radar, with an Indonesian database revealing Samsung's work on an apparent sequel to 2012's Galaxy Camera. After 2013 only brought us the expensive Galaxy NX, we were curious to see how a more affordable, consumer-focused model might arrive. With not much evidence to go on, we had no idea how long it might be before Samsung made this device official, and as it turns out, it's not wasting any time: the first Samsung Android of 2014 to launch is none other than the Galaxy Camera 2. ...

We still may be days away from the official start of CES 2014, but smartphone OEMs sure like to grab the spotlight when they can, so you had better believe that we'll be seeing plenty of these companies trying to get a leg up on the competition by making some of their announcements a little early. Today that means some news from Lenovo, which has a few new 4.7-to-6-inch phones all ready for us to check out. Well, perhaps “new” is too strong a word, because the first guy here is one with which we're already familiar, having first heard the company talk about its LTE-supporting Vibe Z ...

Our apology for the late upload. Sadly we've experienced some bad technical difficulties that just got fixed. Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about Samsung's new Exynos S processor, and what this could mean for their smartphones in 2014. We then talk about Samsung's new mobile RAM chips to power 64-bit processors as well. Then we talk about Asus as the company has already begun teasing its smartphone line-up for CES. Windows Phone 8 returns to the news as we've seen a Jailbreak for the Lumia 920 being teased. We end today's show by talking about the possible joint venture between ...

One week ago, we were lamenting just how little we seemed to know about Sony's upcoming smartphone plans. An international Z1 Mini is still the most promising product on the horizon, and while we ended up seeing quite a few models mentioned as contenders for in-development hardware, we lacked a lot of specifics. With CES just around the corner, will Sony have anything new to debut? One rumor says “yes,” and follows that up with some claims about another handset a few months later. OK, first up we have a model assigned codename Sirius. This would be the first of the two to launch, and ...
