It was the first Windows Phone 8 device to officially break cover, but in a strange twist of circumstance, it's turned out to be (presumably) the last major Windows Phone release of 2012. Coming in behind the HTC Windows Phones and Nokia's Lumia family, we recently asked whether the ATIV S was still worth waiting for. That's a question we won't be able to answer in full until the completion of our review process, but that's a procedure we can get started on right now. That's because, thanks to the fine folks at Samsung, an ATIV S just showed up at our door. Follow along with us as we unbox ...

Products sometimes hit the market later than expected. That's true in any field, and the world of mobile technology is no exception. We've seen countless delayed smartphones and tablets -including the just-launched HTC One VX, hitting shelves much later than anticipated- so at first glance all the fuss about the ATIV S seems a little like an overreaction. That is, until you look at the device in context. The ATIV S is a significant entrant into the Windows Phone 8 space. It's the first Windows Phone device with a 4.8-inch display. Its ATIV branding (new though it is) connotes a high-end ...

A little earlier today we learned that, contrary to what all the nay-sayers would have us believe, Samsung's premiere Windows Phone 8 entry, the ATIV S, would arrive this year after all, with sales starting later this week. Even if the phone won't be coming to carriers near you in the immediate future, that needn't keep you from getting your hands on the smartphone, as we've just caught wind of the first independent retailers announcing their own plans for the ATIV S, along with its Windows 8 tablet cousin, the ATIV Tab. UK-based retailer Clove will have both the ATIV S and ATIV Tab ...

With all the back and forth regarding the launch of the Samsung ATIV S -- otherwise the first Windows Phone 8 device ever officially announced, apparently the last on the shelves -- it is reassuring to hear some good news if you are a fan of the platform and of the South Korean manufacturer. Samsung still promised a 2012 launch of the phone -- and it appeared recently on T-Mobile Austria -- and it looks like our neighbors in Canada will be the lucky ones, if this report is to be believed. According to the leak above, Friday, December 14, 2012 is the day you should be able to snatch one ...

Despite all the uncertainty surrounding the Samsung ATIV S -- the first Windows Phone 8 announced -- the manufacturer has published two new videos starring the phone which, as far as we can wrap our hands around the situation, will be available in some countries this month, in others in January, and worldwide in February. Nonetheless, if you are interested in official Samsung videos about the design and software of the phone, as well as the social media and camera aspects of the ATIV S, you should check out the videos below. They don't bring too much to the table and certainly nothing that ...

Does anyone really know what's going on with the Samsung ATIV S at this point? The earliest-announced Windows Phone model's retail debut has been a subject of much debate over the past few months. First it's delayed, and then it's not, and we just heard yesterday that the phone might not even show its face until February 2013. Once again, Samsung is having to speak out to confirm its plans to release the phone before the year's out. This time, it was WPCentral that managed to get Samsung's ear, where the manufacturer confirmed that the ATIV S is still scheduled for the "end of the year". ...

Not long ago we've heard that Samsung's ATIV S, the first device announced with Windows Phone 8, was delayed and some regions shouldn't expect it this year. January 2013 seems to have been the reported availability period for the phone and after the Taiwanese announcement this was pretty much confirmed (with the exception of Samsung Canada that still believes a December 2012 timeframe was possible). According to new reports based on unnamed sources the phone has been further delayed; this time its appearance should be expected sometime in February of next year. It's already been a long ...

There continues to be a ton of uncertainty surrounding the release of Samsung's first Windows Phone 8 handset, the ATIV S. Samsung announced the model about three months ago now, and since then there's been precious little evidence of headway towards the phone's release. We've heard some things about the ATIV S finally arriving in December, as well as some claims that we wouldn't get to see the smartphone until 2013. Today we've got two new pieces of the puzzle to examine, and unsurprisingly, they still leave us with a lot of questions. On one hand, Samsung just announced the ATIV S for ...

Some Windows Phone fans may be anxiously awaiting the release of WP7.8 for existing handsets, but plenty of others are already moving on to Windows Phone 8. While they've got a selection of HTC and Nokia devices to choose from, whatever happened to the Samsung ATIV S, the very first WP8 handset to be publicly announced? We've already talked to you about some of the delays that have been facing the smartphone's release, and now it looks like we're going to have to push our expectations even further back, upon word that the ATIV S might not be arriving until next year. A couple weeks ago we ...

Windows Phone fans can theoretically choose between two Nokia (Lumia 920, Lumia 820), two HTC (Windows Phone 8X, Windows Phone 8S) and one Samsung model but it looks like the choice is limited to the first four devices with Samsung's own ATIV S being pushed, at least in the UK, until mid-December. Introduced in August 29 as the first device powered by Windows Phone 8, it appears to be the last among the key players on some markets. Our friends over at Clove have updated the status of the phone and if you're in the UK (or want to import it) the information will not make you happy: "first ...

The holiday period is always a busy one, but when you've got industry-defining products launching from literally every major manufacturer and platform-maker, it's a special Q4 indeed. That's what we're looking at with this episode of the Pocketnow Weekly: from Microsoft's new Surface RT and Windows Phones, to Google's new Nexus family, to Apple's iPad Mini, there's a lot to cover. Throw in a lot of Windows 8 and Android commentary, the typically awesome helping of listener mail, and the fact that two-thirds of the podcast team have bad head colds, and you get a sweet -if stuffy- hour and a ...

After yesterday's Microsoft event where Windows Phone 8 was unveiled we've already seen OS ads roll out; while we extensively reviewed the platform and unboxed the HTC Windows Phone 8X as part of our review and today we're seeing Samsung push out its entire ATIV-branded product family in its latest ad. That's the ATIV Smart PC Pro tablet running full Windows 8, ATIV S Windows Phone launched at IFA and rarely seen ever since, and the ATIV TAB running the stripped-down version of Windows 8 for ARM-CPU-powered tablets, Windows RT. We've already seen the prices announced for the ATIV Smart PCs ...
