Huawei's 6.1-inch giant, the Ascend Mate, has the potential to be a big success for the company. While we don't think it quite measures up to the Galaxy Note II, its large screen and jumbo-sized battery could definitely manage to with the handset more than a few fans. The company formally announced the Ascend Mate back during the CES early last month, and though we knew the smartphone would arrive in China sometime in February, we still didn't know that one key detail: its price. As we get ready for the phone to hit carrier shelves, pre-orders for the handset have opened, finally giving us ...

One of the reasons I like Huawei, and why its press events continue to excite me, is its tenacity. The company is the embodiment of persistence. Month after month, it struggles to crack its way into new markets like the United States, and time after time, it gets shut down. Like the nameless protagonist in that classic by Chumbawamba, though, Huawei "gets knocked down, but it gets up again." We're (apparently) never gonna keep it down. Part of the reason for Huawei's difficulty is that, in the consumer space, it's a new brand: for much of its history, the company has functioned as an ODM ...

This year's Consumer Electronics Show from Las Vegas has come and gone. As usual, we've been both on-site bringing you coverage from events as well as the show floor, and here on Pocketnow, keeping you up to date with what's going on in the mobile world. For some the show has been excellent; for others it has been a letdown. We can't compare CES to a specialized mobile event like MWC (maybe with IFA); still, our experience from past years has taught us to expect certain things to happen at CES. They might or might not have happened in a straightforward way but there was a lot of innovation ...

Veni, vidi, vici! We were looking forward to CES 2013, pretty much like we're always looking forward to trade shows where there's a possibility of seeing new and exciting things from and related to the mobile world. Good or bad as it was, this year's Vegas show is just one of many to come and, probably the biggest problem related to CES is the fact that it is followed shortly by MWC, a show related to mobile and only mobile. We're seeing companies slowly moving away from shows to announce their gadgets, following Apple's lead, but even those companies who are show-centric have probably ...

"The Snowball, the 6-Inch Mate, & the In-N-Out Experience." That's the summary that led us out of our most recent podcast, and it narrowly missed becoming the title of this here episode, number 26 in our weekly series. It hasn't been the most hardware-heavy show in memory, but that doesn't mean we don't ...

For our latest CES smartphone head-to-head, we decided to put the bigger-than-anything 6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate against its chief phablet competition, Samsung's hugely successful 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II. Despite an overabundance of screen real estate, Huawei doesn't mess around at all when it comes to letting you take full advantage of the display, enabling you to hide the Android soft keys with a tap. While the Galaxy Note II might be a little more usable a size, and have a display with higher visual quality, there's little doubt that the Ascend Mate has batter power to spare, and its ...

Huawei's Ascend Mate is, by the manufacturer's own boasting, the largest-screened smartphone around. Just how big is big, though? We just took a hands-on look at the Ascend Mate to really show you what you can expect from this Android giant. The Ascend Mate has a 6.1-inch 720p display, and while it may not have the thinnest bezel on the block, the huge screen gives it what Huawei says is the highest screen-to-frame ratio around. To power this beast, Huawei's outfitted the Ascend Mate with a 4050mAh battery and employed power-saving technology to give it a longer operational life time than ...

Last night, the discovery of some Ascend D2 promotional signage made Huawei's announcement today feel almost like a lock, and sure enough, the company has used its time at the CES to announce the Ascend D2 and giant-sized Ascend Mate. First up, the Ascend D2: the phone gets a five-inch 1080p display, quad-core SoC, 3000mAh battery, and a 13-megapixel camera. The handset is also dust and water resistant, demonstrated by pouring an entire pitcher over the phone. Huawei's grand idea for the D2 is that smartphones should be "all-in-one" devices, and a small battery or low-resolution camera ...

Just because it's a new year doesn't mean things are changing with the Pocketnow Weekly podcast. We're still shaking up the host roster on occasion, and we're still squeezing more than 90 minutes of discussion out of the mobile-technology news sector, even in the pit of the post-holiday lull. On our first podcast of 2013, Joe Levi joins us to talk Android amid a sea of pre-CES leaks, but not before we dive into a long and detailed discussion about the new mobile version of Ubuntu - a platform we'll learn how to consistently pronounce someday, but not today. We also touch on Sailfish and ...

There is little to no doubt regarding Huawei's CES line-up; thanks to both rumors and leaks we know to expect Windows Phones as well as Android powered devices next week in Las Vegas. Since we're getting close to the event press renders popping up are not at all unusual. First we have the Ascend D2, pictured above, which we've already seen captured on camera last week. Expect to see an HD resolution screen, a 1.5GHz quad-core CPU, as well as 13-megapixel camera on this device. With a four-inch screen and a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, the Huawei Ascend W1 will be powered by Windows Phone ...

When we first heard of Huawei's Ascend Mate and its gargantuan 6.1-inch display, we almost didn't believe it. Since then, though, company execs have continued to make statements that appeared to confirm the model's existence, and now we've got the photographic proof to back it up. More than just big, it's clear now that the Ascend Mate is also a bit fat, with a noticeable bulge running down its center line from top to bottom. That seems like a decidedly odd design choice, especially for a larger handset, when you're more likely to find yourself using it while resting on a flat surface; it ...

With Samsung's Galaxy Note II doing so well, and other OEMs slowly moving on up to five-inch displays, it's clear that big phones really do have a place in the market. Back in October, we learned that Huawei might be planning to really push those limits, and could be working on a 6.1-inch giant called the Ascend Mate. While we heard that the info was sourced from Huawei's Chinese website itself, at the time we were unable to confirm it as anything more than a rumor. Now the Ascend Mate is starting to seem a bit more real, upon a company exec apparently discussing the smartphone on a ...

Whether you like phablets (or the word itself) or not doesn't really matter; you should get used to phones on steroids with every OEM planning to have one. We know the Galaxy Note and its successor, we've seen HTC's J Butterfly and the Oppo Find 5 and now rumor has it Huawei is preparing the mother of them all: a 6.1-inch beast. Aside from the largest screen on a phone yet the alleged Huawei Ascend Mate reportedly packs full HD resolution, a 1.8 GHz quad-core Huawei K3V3 processor, 2GB of RAM, a large, 4,000mAh battery, Jelly Bean on-board with the OEMs Emotion UI on top of it. The ...
