China is indeed the world's largest mobile market and if you somehow doubt that you should know that China activates more Apple and Android devices than the United States. In such a vast market, Google's Android platform seem to be the undisputed champion, at least for now, sitting comfortably at the top spot. If at the end of Q1 2011 Android accounted for 33.6 percent of the market (by smartphones sold), the end of 2011 saw a whopping growth all the way to 68.4 percent. The credit for this spectacular growth goes in part to Symbian which dropped to its half, that is to 18.7 percent last ...

The Nokia Astound on T-Mobile is essentially the Nokia C7 the rest of the world is familiar with. Just because they're the same hardware, though, doesn't mean they're necessarily treated the same. We most recently saw this disparity when the C7 started getting software updates to Symbian Anna last August, while the Astound didn't have a chance until three months later. Now that Nokia Belle updates are going out, will we see a similarly disappointing wait for the Astound's update? The "disappointing" part might be spot-on, but we wouldn't exactly call it "waiting", as Nokia has announced ...

Unfortunately we've seen this coming!... Nokia has announced planned changes to three of its factories in Komarom (Hungary), Reynosa (Mexico) and Salo (Finland), after recently shutting down its factory in Jucu (Romania). After reviewing smartphone manufacturing operations, announced last September, the Espoo-based company is aiming to increase competitiveness by shifting device assembly to factories in Asia, where major suppliers are located. The three aforementioned factories will focus on smartphone product customization with substantially reduced manufacturing efforts. The measures ...

Back in November, a very blurry photo of a Nokia presentation in Spanish broke word of the next couple iterations of Nokia's once-Symbian platform. Like Android, Nokia's been going with an alphabetical naming scheme for its OS versions, bringing-in Belle as an update to Symbian Anna. According to that photo, next in line are Carla and Donna. What we didn't have, though, was any sort of a timeline for their releases. We're still not sure just when a release might be ready, but signs are in place that Nokia's well-into work on Carla, with bug reports on Nokia's developer site revealing ...

The numbers are in for comScore's November 2011 report related to the US mobile phone industry. In the OEM category nothing seems to be dramatically changing; everyone except Samsung and Google are registering slight negative numbers. 25.6% of the market belongs to Samsung followed by LG with its 20.5% and Motorola with 13.7%. Apple gained 1.4% to reach 11.2% and is ahead of Research in Motion accounting for 6.5% of U.S. mobile subscribers. The platform category is also looking the same but what's worth mentioning is that Google's Android and Apple's iOS are winning users over from ...

The "crazy-fast" cross-platform messaging application, Kik, is now available for Symbian users to connect them with friends on iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone, in real-time. After a period of Beta testing, the app is now out and you can head over to the Nokia Store on your Symbian device to grab Kik. It will allow you to keep in touch with your friends quickly, as it is advertised to be "the fastest smartphone messenger". You'll also be able to receive instant message notifications for sent, delivered, and read messages. "I think writing Symbian off is a very North American ...

Just yesterday, we were looking at the progress Nokia's making towards bringing Symbian Belle updates to several of its smartphones. It's easy to forget, though, that some have been waiting just as long for Anna to get here. For users of the Astound on T-Mobile, we've got some good news, as it look like your Anna updates are finally on their way. The Astound is better-known to the rest of the world as Nokia's C7. Unlike the Astound, the C7 started shipping with Anna over the summer and updates bringing the OS to existing handsets started arriving back in August. Now T-Mobile is catching-up ...

If you thought that the microSIM, the tiny SIM card that became popular with Apple's iPhone 4 and iPad, was difficult to handle (and cut out for some), brace yourselves and prepare for the upcoming nanoSIM. Just as manufacturers like Nokia are joining Apple in the microSIM game, a German company announced the nanoSIM which will be a third smaller. Measuring 12mm x 9mm, it is believed to allow manufacturers to produce even slimmer devices, as the thickness of the SIM has been also reduced by roughly 15%. Of course there will be adapters to allow you to use a nanoSIM in a regular (or ...

While our anticipation of Nokia World at the end of the month is largely motivated by the expected reveal of the company's initial Windows Phone lineup, there's going to be plenty else taking place. A new rumor suggests that the first day of the conference, October 26, might be used to introduce Symbian Belle updates for existing Anna phones. Models like the 700 and 701 ship with Belle pre-installed, but any smartphone that initially shipped running Anna should be in the running for a Belle update of its own. That list includes models like the C7, E7, and N8. We haven't seen any pics or ...

Say you're a Symbian user who's looking for a new phone. You might have heard about Nokia's long-term plans for the platform, and while it should still have a few good years left, the writing's clearly on the wall. You might also have heard about Nokia's support for Windows Phone 7, even though that hardware has yet to materialize. Do you decide to go with what you know, and get in a few more years with Symbian while you can? Maybe switch to another OS while you have the chance, but if so, which one? Some figures measuring smartphone popularity in five of Europe's biggest markets paint a ...

Nokia first introduced Symbian Anna to us with the debut of its E6 and X7 handsets, only recently have we seen the OS update arrive for existing Symbian models. Could the company be planning something similar for the release of Symbian Belle? We may know shortly, as Nokia's put a timer up on its Facebook page counting down to Wednesday morning, promising "something new on Symbian". So far, there's been a leak of an in-development version of Belle, which some users have successfully flashed to N8s. We haven't learned if this release is planned as a stand-alone update, or if Nokia will be ...

It brings a ton of imaging-related features to the phone, such as UI improvements, more Settings, faster, improved red-eye removal and much, much more. These all come, of course, in addition to the highly anticipated 30fps video mode and continuous autofocus. If ...

It looked like Nokia was nearly ready to start sending out Symbian Anna updates to some of its smartphones yesterday, prepping its servers with the software for N8 and E7 models. We wondered, though, what about the C7 and C6-01? All four Symbians were supposed to be getting Anna sometime before the end of the month. Well, we've got good news for owners of those handsets, as well, with Nokia confirming the update is now available for all four smartphones. Symbian fans may already have their sights set on Belle, but those who haven't yet gotten a chance to use Anna will appreciate getting ...

New Nokia smartphones like the E6 come with the latest Symbian Anna pre-installed, but what about existing hardware? Earlier this summer, Nokia confirmed plans to get Anna updates out to the N8, E7, C7 and C6-01 sometime by the end of August. It looks like it will meet that deadline with time to spare, as reports indicate that Nokia's preparing to distribute the update for the N8 and E7 imminently. The Navifirm tool, which connects to Nokia's own servers to access firmware updates, reveals that Nokia has been loading its system with updates for every carrier and color variant of the N8 and ...

Nokia recently confirmed that its plans for the N9 don't include countries like the US or the UK. It explained that its process for deciding which phones see releases in which areas is dependent partially upon what other devices it has or is planning to release there, considering what the repercussions for sales might be if it has multiple phones competing against each other. What we didn't realize at the time is the full extent of this effort by Nokia to segregate sales of its phones; the company just revealed through the president of its US branch that North America is going WP7-only so ...

Nokia's soon to be rebranded Ovi Store is continuing its growth, offering Symbian phone users a slowly but steadily increasing number of applications. Together with that, the number of downlaods per day is also increasing to currently account for 6.5 million. If there were 48,000 applications in the Ovi Store last month, the end of July brings a milestone of 50,000 applications. It's a steady growth if we do the maths but the number of daily downloads has increased by 1.5 million since April. The higher figures are due to "increased demand for apps from the approximately 225-million strong ...

Early last week, we learned of the existence of four upcoming Nokia Symbian smartphones, followed shortly thereafter by getting a look at the first series of pictures depicting one of the the four, the Nokia 700 Zeta. The Zeta continues to be the most newsworthy of the four Nokias, making its second appearance since its reveal, this time with some with some professional-looking renders. The handset in these shots clearly matches what we saw earlier as the Zeta, though thankfully with a bit more tasteful of a color scheme than the earlier black-and-magenta. We also get another brief glimpse ...
