Nokia, a Finnish smartphone company was founded in 1871. What started as a paper manufacturing company evolved into one of the worlds largest and well known names in the mobile device market. Nokia currently works mostly with smartphones and mobile software. In early 2011 the company's new CEO, Stephen Elop signed a strategic partnership with Microsoft where Microsoft will gain access to Nokia's mobile services such as Ovi Maps and Nokia would adopt Windows Phone 7 as an operating system for their new smartphones over the company's own Symbian OS. Time was, you couldn't get a 9xx-series Lumia on any U.S. carrier but AT&T. For over a year, the nation's second-largest wireless provider has exerted a fierce stranglehold on the high-end Nokia segment, forcing competing carriers to offer only midrange handsets if they wanted to carry the finnish OEM's wares. Things change, though. The Nokia Lumia 928 is the first Lumia flagship to cross the blue/red divide, and it's already available from America's largest carrier, Verizon Wireless. The Lumia 928 resembles a Lumia 920 that discovered the beauty of right angles - but there's more here ...

Nokia is a name that is synonymous with great build quality and hardware, awesome mobile cameras, and now Windows Phone. Nokia penned a deal with Microsoft in 2011, pushing its efforts to improve Symbian as a leading smartphone OS and the MeeGo project with Intel to the back burner. As we've learned, however, Nokia's decision to go all-in on Windows Phone hasn't exactly paid off. In fact, after getting a large sum of money from Microsoft at the beginning of the deal, the Finnish manufacturer owes Microsoft more than it can realistically earn from the remainder of the ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about LG's new Optimus GJ and what's different from the previous Optimus G, if there really is any difference. Then we talk about Microsoft and how it had to water-down its YouTube app for Windows Phone 8 due to a petition from Google. Speaking of Google, their new Google Drive is next as it got significantly revamped in mobile. The Nokia EOS project is next as we go through a possible launch date. We end today's show talking about how the news show an HTC quietly sinking due to some major departures in their staff. All this and more after the ...

It's become a trope in mobile tech: write an article about Nokia, and someone will leave a comment suggesting that all the beleaguered company needs to do to return to prominence is build an Android phone. Mark my words: it'll even happen on this article, despite the contravening headline. And, fanboys being fanboys, a flame war (or at least a small brush fire) will erupt. As Emperor Palpatine might say, "it is unavoidable." You don't know the power of the (nonexistent) Nokia Android phone. While I disagree with the premise that a Nokia-Droid would save the company, I understand its ...

While we didn't get a chance to see Nokia's rumored EOS, a 41-megapixel PureView Windows Phone handset, at the company's press event the other week, hope remains that this smartphone is still in the running to make its debut soon. We've recently looked into rumors from sources claiming to have had a glimpse at the hardware, but weren't left with a clearer idea of when the phone might launch, other than maybe sometime this summer. Today we start narrowing that down, with a specific launch date rumored. Supposedly, the EOS could arrive during the second week of July, with July 9 mentioned as ...

The probability for a Nokia phablet is still unknown. However, such a device has been nonetheless subject to rumors in the past, alongside the mystery EOS PureView Lumia device. If a six-incher made by Espoo will become a reality, that would happen only in 2014, according to a recent report. Information coming from "industry sources" might go either way, so we're wearing our skeptical hat for this. It might seem like a logical move though. After the success of jumbophones, especially from Samsung, said sources claim that Nokia is reportedly in discussions regarding such handsets for next ...

Watch today's Pocketnow Daily as we talk about Sony's launch of the Xperia Tablet Z, price points and the reason why it's worth your money. We then move into Apple territory as reports call the next-generation iPad ready for trial production. Later it's HTC in the news as we talk about a Google HTC One in the works and when we assume it might be launched. Then we talk about Nokia and their LiveSight technology reaching their Here Maps application for almost every other device that supports it. We end today's show talking about Samsung's possible project to bring Galaxy fingerprint scanning ...

It's been about six months since Nokia launched Here, its new mapping service. It all sounded very promising, with a rich SDK for letting devs add content to the experience. Of course, Nokia itself continues to tinker away at Here, and today announced a pretty substantial update for the Windows Phone app, adding support for LiveSight augmented reality. We heard Nokia talking about LiveSight back during the Mobile World Congress, when it mentioned the feature being on its way for Here. This should sound like it's very much a take-off on City Lens, because that uses the same LiveSight ...

Samsung Galaxy S 4 vs HTC One vs Apple iPhone 5 vs Nokia 808 PureView; that's the comparison we've been waiting to do ever since this year's flagship Android models came out. That also happens to be the camera comparison most requested by you. So, here it is! We've reviewed all of these phones and, at that time, we compared them against other competitors; this time it's them playing against each-other. While we know that the Apple iPhone 5 is the oldest amongst the best-sellers -- with a refresh due soon -- and the Nokia 808 PureView is more than a year old now, but still regarded by many ...

We later go through the leaks of the Nokia EOS, which is claimed that has already been spotted in the public. Then we go through the Samsung Galaxy S4 and how it's dwarfed the results of the Galaxy S III in these last couple of weeks. We later talk about the HTC One and how the company plans to increase production to meet demand. We end today's show talking about Apple and the possible delay of the iRadio music streaming service. All this and more after ...

Last Friday we were excited about the week ahead, this week, as it contained two days circled with very promising events: Nokia's Lumia 925 event in London and Google's I/O. Both came and passed, leaving us with a phone (or two), and ecosystem improvements. Depending on your expectations and standards your excitement probably either turned into delight or disappointment. Of course we'll talk about Nokia and Google I/O reactions, since they're the most recent (and probably among the last until the next big event of the year bringing us the next iPhone), and you can tell us why you're happy ...

It's been a pretty crazy week of news since Nokia unveiled its new Lumia 925 on Tuesday, and before we break for the weekend I'd like to briefly return to that Lumia 920-refresh to give some overdue kudos - and maybe stir up a bit of discussion. I love our community, fellow geeks, but it needs to be said: we can be a fickle bunch of puling, pompous jerks. And these past few months have borne that out, with fanboys of the Android persuasion more riled up than ever before. All across the internet, formerly complacent Samsung fans have risen up to counter the assault of suddenly emboldened ...

It's time to be skeptical! The "real PureView" Windows Phone was not unveiled at the London event on the 14th of May despite many were hoping for the rumored Nokia EOS to appear. Instead, we got the Lumia 925 and some more time to dream about the 41-megapixel Windows Phone. The rumors and reports continue though, with the latest talking about the EOS. Someone has allegedly seen the phone and said that it's a polycarbonate phone as thick as the Lumia 920 but heavily tapered towards the edges. To quote the rest: "The lens housing is round in shape and does not protrude much. The flash is ...

Read OnAfter what seemed like an endless torrent of leaks, Nokia's Lumia 928 for Verizon finally went official earlier this month, getting its formal announcement a week ago. At the time, we learned that the phone would be available in Verizon retail stores beginning today, May 16. We also see online sales of the phone open up today, but the 928 isn't quite ready to ship just yet. According to Verizon, orders for the Lumia 928 will ship by next Monday, May 20. We know, that's just a few days, but the disparity between online and retail availability dates may just point to possible supply chain ...

Last we checked, there are 52 weeks in a year - but you wouldn't know it, given the announcement schedule of some major players in the tech space. Companies vying for the attention of fickle consumers often stack their events one right after the other in a strategic attempt to undermine competitors, sometimes hosting major announcements just days -or even hours- apart. Sometimes, it's all a tech podcast team can do to keep up. Such a thing happened this week, with Nokia preempting Google's annual I/O developer conference with an announcement of its own: the Lumia 925, a mid-cycle Windows ...
