Yesterday, Microsoft released the new Zune HD version 4.5 firmware which adds some great new features including Smart DJ, Picks, new video Codec support, screensaver enhancements, and an updated TV-out interface that includes Marketplace access. The Picks feature shows up in the Marketplace and lists a number of artists that Zune thinks you might like based on your specific listening habits. This is great for discovering new or old music that you may never have known about otherwise. The Smart DJ is equally useful for discovering new music. After you navigate to an artist’s page you’ll see a Smart DJ button. This will create a playlist for you that includes some of that artist’s music plus a range of similar or related music. This works best if you have a Zune Pass subscription and internet connection since in that case, Smart DJ will create a playlist that includes Zune content that you have not yet downloaded to your device.
