There’s a small application around that is advertised to work with the HTC HD2, HTC Touch HD, HTC Touch Pro 2 and the HTC HD Mini and which allows you to trigger the Camera app’s shutter by using the Volume keys on the side as opposed to tapping on the on-screen virtual shutter.

Install the application to your Device and from there on, launch the Camera application by one of the new icons. Short pressing of the volume key should trigger the shutter and long pressing should zoom. If it is still activating the Volume Control, then your Camera app is not supported (version 6.26 1922.1732 and 6.26.2012.1425 are fine).
