Now here’s a pleasant surprise.. YouTube has just updated their mobile site m.youtube.com with a significant upgrade to any mobile device rocking an HTML5 compliant browser. Aside form significant speed improvements in page load, a new UI and other HTML5 features like Video Tagging, what strikes me the most is seeing my iPhone do a better job in rendering HQ video and also buffering in less time on this mobile site than what the native app can do.
Yes,.. if you’re like me and hate how the iPhone’s native app renders choppy video over 3G without you being able to choose video quality, you’ll be stunned to see that this is not a problem any more if you use the mobile site. For some reason, the new HTML5 experience defaults video to QuickTime instead of the iPhone’s App, but regardless of your connection speed, you still get the option to choose HQ or not. In the end, who cares as long as the experience improves!
After a quick look at the video, it seems that only the iPhone’s Safari browser and Android’s browser are currently HTML5 compliant. Everything worked well on my iPhone 3Gs but I had no luck on my HTC Touch Pro2 sporting Windows Mobile 6.5 on either Opera Mobile or PIE. To give it a test drive or know if your device is compliant, set your mobile browser to m.youtube.com and see if it looks anything like our screenshots. Enjoy!
