Fresh off the arrival of the Android port of Instagram, today Facebook announced it will be purchasing the company behind the popular photography app for an astonishing $1B. Facebook ownership means that Instagram will find itself a whole new level of exposure, but just what how will this new-found attention end up changing the app? Could we be looking forward to seeing Instagram migrate to other platforms?

Mark Zuckerberg posted a message wherein he touches upon some of what Facebook’s planning for Instagram. Even with Facebook behind it, you’ll still be able to post your pics on other sites, as well as having the choice not to post them to Facebook at all. He does talk about integrating Instagram tech into Facebook itself, but notes that his company intends to keep building upon Instragram, rather than quickly assimilating and being done with it.

We’re intrigued by some comments Zuckerberg made about spreading the app to new users. We’re sure there are plenty of Windows Phone and BlackBerry users who might like a chance to use Instagram, and Facebook might be the force needed to see those versions produced. Even if we don’t see straight-up ports released as stand-alone apps, Facebook integrating some Instagram functionality into its own app might serve as the vehicle to deliver it to these currently-untouched platforms.
