It looks like Verizon Wireless is running a promotion giving away the mobile hotspot service on the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus for free. The app is already available as a free download thru Palm’s App Catalog and according to a message we received from a Verizon Wireless rep:
Customers who purchase or upgrade to a Palm Pre and Palm Pixi will get the Mobile Hotspot for free. Existing customers who already have the service will find charges on their next bill will be $0.00.
The device pricing will be: $49.99 buy one get one free, and the Pixi will be $29.99 buy one, get one free.
The spokesperson for Verizon Wireless noted that “It will take a little more time to update the free Mobile Hotspot promotion but customers who purchase the device will be told of the free Hot Spot.”
Update: For those in disbelief, we did confirm with VZW and this is not an April Fool’s joke.
There is no telling how long this service promotion will last, but those interested should jump on it or call Verizon Wireless for additional details. The service used to cost $40 in addition to a customer’s regular voice and smartphone data plan service for use of the hotspot feature. Now, tethering is free on the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, which could run as high as $60 for service on a device like the MiFi or a USB modem.
With rival Sprint releasing the HTC EVO 4G Android 2.1 smartphone with the ability to tether up to 8 devices to Sprint’s 3G or 4G network, Verizon is looking to ride the gaining popularity of mobile hotspot feature. Sprint hasn’t announced what its pricing will be for the feature nor for 4G service tied to a smartphone.
