Late last month we heard that the expected Skype Mobile video chat support for the HTC Thunderbolt wouldn’t be ready in time for the phone’s launch. Instead, users would get a placeholder app and receive notification when the finished program was ready for downloading. At the time, there was no expected release date available. Some just-uncovered Verizon documents show that the carrier expects Skype Mobile with video to launch on February 28.

The VoIP software with video calling will be supported by future Verizon LTE smartphones as well, but will make its debut on the Thunderbolt. In fact, assuming this information is current, the app release gives us some insight into when we can expect the phone itself. After hearing that the Thunderbolt had been delayed, with no new release information available, we could have been looking at waiting until spring for the phone’s retail debut. Instead, since the phone is presumably coming out before the Skype app does on the 28th, we’ve narrowed the phone’s release window to just a couple weeks.

In addition to its video support, the 4G edition of Skype Mobile will be keeping all features 3G users enjoy, including instant messaging and support for international calling. This new version also expands upon the app’s integration with your phone, as your Skype contacts will be synced-up with your phone’s address book, rather than maintaining a separate list for Skype’s exclusive use.
