The US government will be investing $8 billion of money to upgrade the aging GPS system that is in use by over 1 billion GPS devices globally. The upgrades will happen over a decade and the government will be replacing the 24 satellites that provide location information. As a result, accuracy of positioning will increase and the margin of error will be reduced from 20 ft to 3 ft.
