As the tradition goes, the New Years Eve celebration in Times Square will be complete with the dropping of the ball, plenty of confetti, and thousands of people. But this year, add one more component, this one having to do with technology: a free smartphone app for your Android or iPhone. The app is built by Toshiba, and includes a countdown timer, a live video stream, social media integration, and history about the celebration. There’s even a way to get your photo from the night featured on the huge Toshiba Vision sign if it gets enough votes. To get the app, search either market for “Times Square”.
