A little bit earlier, we got word of Sprint and Google’s new alliance for Google Voice, letting you use your mobile number with Sprint as a Google Voice number without any porting to worry about. The service was slated to kick off next Tuesday, April 26, but it looks like they’ve jumped the gun, as multiple Sprint users are reporting it’s already up-and-running.
Sprint customers who log in to Google Voice as of today should see the notification of the partnership, and will have the option to take advantage of the account-linkage or go on using things like normal. If you didn’t already have a Voice account, entering your Sprint mobile number will allow you to sign up with that as your Voice number, without needing to port it over and pay the associated fee. If you’re already hooked-up with Google Voice, you can set it up so that when you make outgoing calls from your Sprint phone, your Google number will show up on the receiver’s Caller ID as the line from which the call’s originating.
If your smartphone’s on Sprint, head over to Google to check out if it’s already working for you. Even if you’re not a fan of the new integration, you can always turn back the clock and restore everything to how it was before, without penalty.
