GroupMe is a group messaging and conference calling service with which users are able to easily send text messages to groups. It turns out that Skype is planning to acquire GroupMe after being in talks with GroupMe for a few months.
Of course, Microsoft owns Skype and Windows Phone’s upcoming Mango refresh has some neat group texting features. Still, GroupMe has the ability to send messages to groups of people using data connection and thus save on your monthly bill in terms of SMS. That feature could very well be implemented in Windows Phone (or ignored altogether) together with the conference calling features. Anyways, the terms of the Skype-GroupMe deal haven’t been disclosed so there’s no specific information on price or effective date.
