What’s better than enjoying the countdown for the new year in Times Square? Well, your ability to do it and share it with your family and friends over a Skype video call, FaceTime or any other data hungry video calling service.
Skype, now owned by Microsoft, just decided to give you a full 24 hours of free Wi-Fi on December 31st, all throughout Manhattan and certain other neighborhoods like: Times Square (of course), West Village, East Village, South Village, Greenwich Village, NoHo, SoHo, Lower East Side, Clinton, Chelsea, Union Square, Midtown, Midtown South, Murray Hill, Stuyvesant Park and Turtle Bay.
All you have to do is activate your Wi-Fi connection on your Laptop, Tablet, Smartphone or whatever Wi-Fi capable client you have and search for a network called “Skype WiFi”. The service is being provided by Towerstream’s commercial WiMAX network, so yay for them too. We’re not really sure if they’re going to be able to handle as much traffic as we know this will generate, but please do give it a try and share it.
