We have another App Store in the game but this time it comes from Opera and this time it’s a multi-platform software market which supports Android, BlackBerry, Java, Palm, Symbian and Windows Mobile powered devices.
Opera announced today — through a strategic partnership with Appia, the leading provider of open application marketplace technology — the opening of the Opera Mobile Store to be found at http://mobilestore.opera.com available in more than more than 200 countries. The content of the store is uniquely customized for the device used to access it so you will be presented with the applications corresponding to your handset.
In order to support the developers, Opera also launched the Opera Publisher Portal where coders can easily add apps to the store. “The Opera Mobile Store presents a remarkable opportunity for mobile application developers to distribute localized content through a single, far-reaching marketplace” said Jud Bowman, CEO of Appia while Mahi de Silva, EVP, Consumer Mobile, Opera Software, said “The launch of the Opera Mobile Store supports Opera’s core belief in an open, cross-platform mobile Internet experience by providing Opera users with an integrated storefront of mobile applications”.
While the addition of another market for software is a great opportunity for developers to publish and monetize their apps — and for users to have alternatives — it will be rather difficult to face marketplaces like Google’s for instance. Nevertheless, joining several platforms into a single market is a neat way to attract users. Now it all depends on the content added.
