Back in November, a very blurry photo of a Nokia presentation in Spanish broke word of the next couple iterations of Nokia’s once-Symbian platform. Like Android, Nokia’s been going with an alphabetical naming scheme for its OS versions, bringing-in Belle as an update to Symbian Anna. According to that photo, next in line are Carla and Donna. What we didn’t have, though, was any sort of a timeline for their releases. We’re still not sure just when a release might be ready, but signs are in place that Nokia’s well-into work on Carla, with bug reports on Nokia’s developer site revealing several Symbian models currently running in-testing Carla code.

You’ll need to register for a Nokia developer account before you can start poking around its site, but upon doing so, you may notice bug reports dealing with Carla problems on both the E6 and the 701. That alone is a good sign, suggesting that the 701 and other native Belle devices may be getting Carla updates along the same timetable as older Anna phones that just recently may have stepped up to Belle.

So far, these bug reports don’t give us much insight into new Carla features. From that leaked slide, we might expect new surround sound support, and changes happening regarding NFC and widgets; we still need details on just what those changes might entail. Following Carla, Donna should bring dual-core support to the platform.
