With Symbian slowly on its way out, fans of the platform have been anxiously keeping track of platform software developments, wondering just how many more updates they could really hope to see. We’ve had Belle for a while now, and have known about Carla and Donna on the horizon. That much has been clear, but things started to get murky upon the news of Belle Feature Packs. FP1, arriving with the 808 PureView, was thought by some to be the name by which Carla would actually be released, after Nokia renamed Symbian Belle to simply Belle. There’s some new evidence now that suggests that Carla is entirely distinct from any Feature Pack, and that as a result we’ll end up seeing even more system software updates before Symbian fades away.

The key here is Nokia’s developer site, where postings of bug reports revealed work on Carla back at the beginning of February. My Nokia Blog was digging through the latest posts to the site when it found an interesting note referencing the behavior of a bug on both Carla and Belle FP2.

This seems to confirm that not only is FP1 not Carla, but that we’ll be seeing a whole separate Feature Pack arrive before Carla even gets here. With Donna still proposed for after that, Symbian fans just might have quite a bit to look forward to in the future.
