Motorola is rumored to be working on a pair of spiritual successors to the Defy, also to feature a similar type of ruggedized construction.
According to Eldar Murtazin, who is regularly ahead of the curve when it comes to knowing about upcoming phones, Motorola is planning to release this new pair in 2011. Both are supposed to be low-cost models, priced half as much as the Defy. It’s not totally clear if they’ll be smartphones or just ruggedized feature phones, especially on budget prices, but Murtazin did say they’ll be in the style of the Defy; take from that what you will.
Hopefully Motorola has learned whatever lessons it needed to from its experience building the Defy, which has recently been plagued by reports of hardware failures. For a phone that’s built to take a licking, for it to break when it’s not being abused is just unacceptable. There’s cause to be nervous, as this rumored pair is supposed to be even less resilient than the Defy. Unlike the Defy, they won’t rated for water resistance, possibly a consequence of their lower price points.
