Symbol Technologies was a platinum sponsor of the conference, along with HP and Palm. They have been producing rugged hand held scanners and hand held mobile computers for over 30 years. Symbol is a recognized worldwide leader in enterprise mobility, delivering products and solutions that capture, move and manage information in real time to and from the point of business activity.
On May 9th Symbol announced the 500,000th purchase of one of their MC9000 mobile computer. The unit was purchased by Coca Cola Enterprises. The MC9000 series runs Windows Mobile 5.0 premium or phone edition on an Intel PXA270 processor running at 624MHZ. These rugged units have been drop tested at 6ft, across their operating temperature range of -4 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, tumble tested 2000 times at 1 and 2 meters, and they meet the IP64 environmental sealing standard. It can be purchased with a myriad of options from bar code scanners to RFID readers.
Symbol has a great lineup of Windows Mobile 5.0 hand held units, pocketnow.com will have a chance over the next several months to run some of them through their paces. We will see how well they stack up to the non rugged world of Pocket PCs.
