For all the flack the IRS gets about its bureaucracy, obtusely-worded forms, and constantly-changing rules, you’ve got to give the agency credit for its attempts to modernize how you interact with it. In a world where correcting a typo on a vehicle title still means standing in line for hours at the DMV, copy upon copy of documentation in hand, the ability to e-file your taxes with the IRS is a beacon of efficiency. Continuing along those lines of trying to streamline the tax process in a digital world, the IRS has announced its IRS2Go smartphone app for keeping up with the latest updates on your tax refund.
The free IRS2Go app is available for both iOS and Android platforms. You can use it whether you e-filed your return, or you mailed in a paper copy – in the latter case you’ll just have a longer delay before your refund information is available. After entering some personal information and answering questions about your filing and expected refund, the app will let you check on your refund status. If you’re lucky enough to be getting one, IRS2Go will keep you abreast of how large a refund is coming your way, and when.
For users of other smartphone platforms, much of this functionality is duplicated on the IRS’s website; the app just provides a convenient means by which to access that data. In addition to the refund updates, the app lets you sign up for email alerts of tips to find additional write-offs and save money on next year’s return. The app is available now in the App Store and the Android Market.
