HBO subscribers have been patiently waiting for the company to release HBO GO apps for smartphones, with iPhone and Android versions promised for release sometime this year. There hasn’t been much news in the way of progress towards their releases, short of some tangential mentions in press releases that the project was still in the works. Now HBO has published a teaser video for the apps, which may be coming as soon as May 2.
Though the video focuses mainly on the iPad version of HBO GO, we presume the most of the app’s navigation will remain intact on smaller devices, with the main changes affecting screen layout. At the end of the bit, HBO flashes a “05.02.11” date onscreen, but doesn’t specify just what’s to happen then. Considering the multiple platforms being discussed, it’s conceivable that not everything will be available all at once, though we certainly hope that at least the iPhone and Android versions will arrive that soon.
There’s some more good news, in that the video confirms that streaming video won’t be relegated only to use over a home WiFi connection. Though you’d want high-speed data for best image quality, the apps will support streaming over ordinary 3G connections, letting you watch HBO programming in more places than ever. There’s no word on when to expect MAX GO apps for Cinemax subscribers.
