Tax season is creeping up on those of us living in the US, with only a couple weeks to go for those among us who have been putting things off until the last minute. If that’s the boat you find yourself in, there’s a chance that your procrastination will pay off with the opportunity to file your taxes for free via smartphone.
TurboTax SnapTax is an iOS and Android app that can help you prepare some simple tax returns and file them electronically. All you have to is snap some pictures of your tax paperwork, answer some questions, and it should do most of the rest for you. Normally, taking advantage of the service will run you about $25, but this weekend the company has a free offer going on.
If you’re a new customer, and you initially start preparing your return with the app between March 31 and April 1, TurboTax will waive the $25 filing fee. That will let you submit both state and federal returns, but there are a few stipulations. Like we said, the app is for simple tax returns, so if you need to file anything other than the 1040EZ, or you have something in addition to the most typical income sources, this app isn’t for you.
For now, we’ve only heard about this deal for the Android version of SnapTax, but it seems like there’s a good chance it will also apply to iOS users.
Update: Some more details on the offer have arrived, and it’s not for SnapTax, but another TurboTax app, and one that’s tablet-only.
