WiMax HTC Supersonic to Run Android 3.0 Operating System

Whether or not you’re cautious or trusting of HTC rumors, there’s a new one about the 4G WiMax capable Supersonic. The Supersonic may essentially be the Android cousin to the Windows Mobile HTC HD2–the former will have a capacitive 4.3-inch touchscreen display and possible Snapdragon processor like the latter. What’s interesting though is that the Supersonic is said to be running Google’s next-generation Android OS 3.0–Android 2.0 debuted in late 2009 with the Motorola Droid on Verizon Wireless and the T-Mobile-compatible and SIM-unlocked Google Nexus One saw a bump to Android 2.1. While prior rumors indicate a Sprint device, the screenshot of the OS shows T-Mobile as the carrier.

If the Supersonic does run Android OS 3.0 as rumored, the device may not be appearing on the market in the near future as 2.1 was barely launched with the Nexus One. It’d be interesting to see and learn what major changes come to Android in the next major release. If the handset does come towards the end of 2010, Google will be facing a–hopefully–improved Windows Mobile 7 as a competitor.

The screenshot from BGR shows the carrier as T-Mobile, which runs a GSM/HSPA network, while prior rumors of the device have pegged the Supersonic for a 4G WiMax network operated by Sprint. We’re not sure of the authenticity of the screenshots nor any of the details surrounding the rumors at this point.
