Storm Franchise Exclusivity Ending on Verizon, Coming to AT&T?

Verizon Wireless released the BlackBerry Storm about a year ago with maker Research in Motion as the carrier’s flagship device in an attempt to thwart switchers to AT&T for the iPhone. Now, nearly a year later and not only are we hearing about a Storm 2 as a successor, but it looks like the Storm franchise’s exclusivity on Verizon Wireless in the US may be coming to an end. Reportedly, a Storm 2 3G edition is in the works and could be coming to AT&T and Rogers in North America according to Boy Genius Report.

The rumor posted by BGR is speculative at best. The original Storm did exist in GSM flavor for the rest of the world through Verizon Wireless’ partner, Vodafone. However, due to the American exclusivity, Verizon Wireless was the only carrier to offer the device in the US and that device was available with US 3G on CDMA technology using EVDO while a SIM card allowed for global roaming, though US GSM bands were not supported.

Here are the specs for the Storm 2 on CDMA:

-CDMA 1xRTT/EVDO Rev. A

-Quad-band GSM/EDGE

-Single-band UMTS/HSDPA (2100MHz only)

-Wi-Fi b,g

-3.2 megapixel camera

-360×480 resolution capacitive screen

-OS 5.0
