The smartphone community, pocketnow included, has been inundated with Android 2.2 (codename “Froyo”) news since its announcement at Google IO 2010 and the initial over-the-air (OTA) rollout of the Froyo update to a select set of Nexus One phones.
As was to be expected, the “official” link to the Froyo update.zip has been turned off, meaning OTA updates have likely stopped, and the links in various articles detailing how to flash Froyo on your Nexus One are now broken.
So why suddenly turn-off the Froyo update?
First off, it looks like “protected apps” aren’t available in the Market. While this is probably a temporary condition, it’s concerning to not be able to download and install one’s previously purchased apps.
Next, some apps are behaving “strangely”. This is likely due to JIT engine to run apps noticeably faster. While some of this is to be expected, it’s frustrating nonetheless.
In my experience so far, a lot more Force Close type errors are being thrown. This likely dovetails with the prior item regarding the way “legacy” apps are being run in the new JIT environment.
Battery life is also down. Half way through my day, I’m down to 61%, where before Froyo I was typically in the high 80s.
While I’m sure that these issues are not indicative of what we should expect from the public release of Froyo, it is frustrating for us hackers.
When asked why Google didn’t do a bulk-upgrade OTA for all stock Nexus One’s, in my opinion, this is why. They’re using the initial release to shake it down and discover bugs and problems. Once those issues are identified and resolved, they’ll likely push a new OTA in batches until everyone (stock) is covered. Once that’s done I forecast they’ll release the Froyo bits to AOSP.
Once Froyo hits AOSP, Cyanogen will start working on incorporating that into CyanogenMod and life will be happy.
What about you?
Did you install Froyo on your Nexus One? Are you experiencing any of the problems a lot of the rest of us are?
If you haven’t updated yet, what are you plans? Are you more or less likely to update now? Are you going to wait for the official OTA, or for CyanogenMod?
