The T-Mobile HTC HD2 is confirmed to get Blockbuster video streaming for on-demand rentals and it looks like Netflix may be poised to compete with Blockbuster on the iPhone platform. The iPhone already has a la carte rentals courtesy of the iTunes Store on the device, but the addition of the Netflix service may complement iTunes well as Netflix is more of a subscription streaming service–there is no individual rental fees and users can stream as many movies as they can watch in a month with the monthly plans.
A recent survey released by the company may be most telling of the company’s plans. According to one part of the Netflix survey, which paints a scenario for would-be users,
“Imagine that Netflix offers its subscribers the ability to instantly watch movies & TV episodes on their iPhone. The selection availability to instantly watch includes some new releases, lots of classics and TV episodes. There are no advertisements or trailers, and movies start in as little as 30 seconds. You can fast-forward, rewind, and pause or watch again. The movies & TV episodes you instantly watch are included in your Netflix membership for no additional fee.”
Users can answer the question by choosing how likely they would be in using that feature.
The survey implies that the streaming rental service would be only available over WiFi and not over a mobile 3G data network, which may limit its potential.
A survey may not mean that the features in question would be commercialized and released, but it may show that the company is exploring and evaluating market demand for such a product.
