In a somewhat surprising move, Apple is rumored to be turning to Microsoft and using Bing as the preferred search engine on future iterations of iPhones. The move makes sense though as Google and Apple are both encroaching on each other’s territory–Chrome versus Safari, Android versus iPhone OS, Nexus One against iPhone hardware, and Apple venturing into the mobile advertising business. Apple’s switch to Bing would give Microsoft a large boost in mobile searches–Bing is already the default search on Verizon Wireless BlackBerry devices.
The rumored move may seen as offensive and preemptive on Cupertino’s part, especially as Apple seeks out Google’s competitor to power its mobile devices.
