Zeoneo’s Crossword Evolution v1.19

WHAT’S HOT

Crossword Evolution is a graphical gem. With everything
(including the help file) matching the same style, it really gives this
game a complete and unified feeling.

SETUP

The install routine for Crossword Evolution is
normal. This review was completed on my iPaq 2215 running XCPUScalar,
installed to my 512Mb CF card.

PROGRAM FEATURES

    First, let’s review Crossword Evolution’s
features (copied verbatim from Zeoneo’s
website
):

HELP SUPPORT

Crossword Evolution has a built-in help system that covers every aspect of the game.
Additionally, on Zeoneo’s
website
, there is a FAQ and forums. They are also very quick
to respond to emails.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

    According to Zeoneo,
Crossword Evolution requires a PocketPC (ARM or MIPS).

BUGS AND WISHES

    I
found no fatal errors, and my wishlist is short:

    • Occasionally, the skip feature
would skip over a location that didn’t seem to have any text
    • Add
the ability to import free puzzles
    • Add
      book-wide statistics
    • Give
the user the ability to suspend the application briefly to return
      to the main screen
    • Add
a multi-user mode (so more than one person can individually
      work on the puzzles)

PURCHASING

    You
can buy Crossword Evolution from Zeoneo.
The price shown is £9.95 (approximately $18 US).

PROS

  • Fantastic graphics and
    style

  • Additional puzzles available
    (for purchase)

  • Well designed user interface

  • Decent price

CONS

  • Only 20 free puzzles
  • No book-wide statistics
  • No multi-user mode

OVERALL IMPRESSION

Zeoneo has once again produced a beautifully
designed product. Crossword Evolution is easy to use, while still
remaining challenging enough to keep you interested. At approximately
$18, that’s less than a dollar per puzzle (in the free set), with
others available for purchase. I do wish that there was a book-wide
statistics or perhaps a multi-user mode, but neither of these
should turn you away from Crossword Evolution if you are a crossword
fanatic or just beginning. While I understand the need to make
additional money on the puzzle packs, an ability to import external
puzzles would be a boon to the user. Crossword Evolution is definitely
on my list of recommended games from this point forward.
