Trisystech’s Aeon of Discovery v1.1

WHAT’S HOT

Trisystech’s previous roll-play game, Medieval Folk Healer, has given the software company some experience in the market. They have clearly pooled their amassed knowledge, and raised the bar with Aeon of Discovery.

SETUP

Setup is a breeze; after downloading the software simply run the self-installer on your PC while connected via ActiveSync to you PDA and in seconds you are ready to play.

PROGRAM FEATURES

Aeon of Discovery’s premise is the 15th century colonization of the Americas by European powers France, Spain, Portugal and Britain. The Americas are parted up into some 31 regions, each of which needs to be explored before attempting to colonize, develop and fortify. Meanwhile your rival countries are doing the same, and the race is on to be the most powerful European country on the new continents. Rival colonies can be raided which, if successful, yields significant monetary benefit to the raiding party.

The main problems facing the player are the loss of explorers, difficulty establishing settlements, plague, pirates, Indians, taxes payable to the homeland and of course the rising and raiding of your power-hungry opponents. The game is played out in turn, each country being allowed a single action at a time. A country may skip its turn if desired (called ‘biding its time’). The player is allowed to choose the relative intelligence of competing countries at game’s start, and of course games can be saved for later play.

I have found Aeon of Discovery to be very entertaining. It is a fun yet challenging game of strategy, with a great interface, graphics and soundtrack to go with it. I wish that more than one game could be saved, and it would be nice if it could be moved to the background in order to use other PDA programs instead of having to save, quit and then wait for the long introduction again in order to check on your calendar and tasks.

HELP SUPPORT

There is a Quick Guide available on Aeon of Discovery’s Website.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Aeon of Discovery will run on any Pocket PC device with ARM/XScale, 5 MB Storage Memory, and 8 MB Program Memory.

BUGS AND WISHES

I really like Aeon of Discovery; the game is well thought-out and the interface and graphics are great. I also like that it is more of a thinking man’s game than many of its other video game brethren. However, it would be nice to send it to the background instead of having to close it to get to other programs, and it would be nice to save more than one game for future use. Perhaps in future versions Trisystech will heed these complaints, as said changes would make the gaming experience that much better.

PURCHASING

Aeon of Discovery can be purchased from the pocketnow.com Store for $9.95.

OVERALL
IMPRESSION

In the end, Aeon of Discovery is an entertaining and intelligent addition to my PDA’s Games folder. A game of intellect and strategy, it is sure to keep any player entertained. I particularly like how Aeon of Discovery gives the player a glimpse of the historical significance of the Age of Exploration to the modern Americas.
