SETUP

Nothing tough here: connect your PDA to your PC, fire up the self-installer, and off you go.

PROGRAM FEATURES

Pocket Plus is a Tab-based program springboard for your today screen. It fits seamlessly into the Windows interface and yet is easy to identify. The stock (read: most useful) shortcuts are available under the ‘Main’ tab, while the ‘Connect’ and ‘System’ tabs hold other, appropriate shortcuts. The ‘Main’ tab’s initial contents are:

  • Battery monitor
  • Backlight adjuster (very helpful, and missing from Batter Pack Pro)
  • File Explorer
  • Recent Applications
  • Memory monitor
  • Backup Battery monitor

Of course, all of the tabs’ names can be changed. You can also add new tabs, delete old ones, and custom tailor each tab’s shortcut content to your liking. My favorite (admittedly quasi-childish) feature is the ‘Main’ tab’s home-with-green-arrow button; click this repeatedly to change the OS’s background and theme. Additional themes can be downloaded from Spb’s website. I also like the Battery meter that spans the whole top edge of the screen.

Beyond Pocket Plus’s usefulness as a toolbar, the program offers ZIP file support, a ‘Close’ button that exits programs instead of hiding them (very helpful for freeing up system resources and keeping your mobile device running efficiently), and some extended Pocket Internet Explorer functions like multiple windows or full screen and a ‘view as source code’ option.
If you compare Pocket Plus and Battery Pack Pro side-by-side you will notice that Pocket Plus has much fewer shortcuts on the Today screen at any given time. I find this less-cluttered environment preferable to Battery Pack Pro’s boatload of present icons.

HELP SUPPORT

Spb’s Support Page is full of helpful information. Plus, in the event that the documented knowledge base can’t answer your question, the page offers a convenient form for you to submit your hard-to-answer questions.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Pocket Plus will run on any Pocket PC and Windows CE system that has enough storage room for the program files.

BUGS AND WISHES

I would like to see a convenient way to default all of the user-defined settings to their original states. Also, it would be nice if the icons could be made smaller so that more could fit into one tab without requiring the user to scroll around on the Today screen to see all the options.

PURCHASING

Pocket Plus is available from the pocketnow.com store for $14.95.

PROS

  • Great Utilities

  • Interface is easy to use and not cluttered

  • Helpful documentation

CONS

  • Smaller Icons would allow room for others

  • No default settings option

OVERALL
IMPRESSION

Spb’s Pocket Plus is a pleasure to use and affords the user easy access to several of the operating system’s features that are otherwise cumbersome to reach. Add to that the Tabs’ ability to organize a load of shortcuts without inundating the Today screen, and this piece of software has earned a permanent spot on my PDA.
