Legacy | June 13, 2008 12:03 AM

INTRODUCTION

Spb Software House entered the mobile backup market in February, 2006.
With release 2.0 of Spb Backup, they continue to add features and improve performance.
We’ll take a look at what’s new and compelling in the latest release to see if it’s
a viable option for backing up your mobile device. Read on for the review!

WHAT’S HOT

    Key features:

  • Full and customized backup/restore
  • Device and ROM upgrade modes
  • Desktop sync and unpack tools
  • Self-extracting backup files
  • Scheduled backups

SETUP

Spb Backup can be installed to any desktop PC using ActiveSync or a CAB
file can be installed directly from your device. The desktop installer will also install
Spb Backup Sync and Spb Backup Unpack (info on Page 2) to your desktop computer.

PRODUCT FEATURES

The most obvious features of any backup product are its backup and restore
capabilities. Spb Backup does a great job of making these activities simple and straight-forward.

The full, custom, and scheduled backup options all walk through pretty similar
wizard interfaces. Full backup archives all the files on the device, custom backup allows you to
specify which items should be included in the backup, and scheduled backup allows you to
run regular unattended backups.

All manual backups can be given a name and storage location. Custom backups
also allow you to select which items will be included in the backup.

Scheduled backups allow you to specify day and time for regular backups as well as
determine the number of backup files to keep in storage.

When running custom or scheduled backups, you can also specify compression and
encryption options to save space on your device and secure your personal information.

Restoring items from a backup is simply a matter of selecting the backup file
and specifying whether the restore will be complete or partial.

Restoring a backup file after a ROM or device upgrade can sometimes cause problems, but
Spb Backup can make appropriate adjustments during the restore operation so you don’t have any
trouble.

A convenient Today screen plug-in gives you a nice summary of the last backup
operation and the next scheduled backup operation. Clicking on the plug-in will start the Spb
Backup wizard.

In addition to adding new features, Spb Backup 2.0 also improves performance
compared to its predecessor. According to Spb benchmarks, backups can run in half the time required
by earlier versions. I did not run any comparison tests, but the backup operations of Spb Backup
always seemed very fast. Though not the result of an independent study, performance comparisons can
be found on the Spb website.

During testing, backup files always contained reliable copies of the data on my device.
Though it always makes me a bit nervous to actually restore files on my device, I found that Spb Backup
left me with a functioning device and I could not discern any difference between the state of my device
before the backup and the state of my device after a hard reset and restore. Setting up rules to ignore
certain file types (e.g. MP3 and JPEG files) allowed me to skip files that I didn’t want to include in my
backups. The ability to perform a partial restore allows for the restoration of an accidentally
deleted folder. The feature set and user interface of Spb Backup are very well designed.
