SOTI, Inc’s Pocket Controller Professional v4.12

Legacy | September 21, 2004 12:00 AM

SETUP

Installation requires little more than running the Windows installer on your PC. Once the software is installed, connect your PDA via the USB coble, and Pocket Controller will connect to your device on upon command.

PROGRAM FEATURES

Pocket Controller Professional is aimed primarily at PDA hardware and software designers as a means of testing and demonstrating their products, and also at businesses that rely on mobile devices (Pocket Controller Professional also works with several mobile phones) for scheduling, data management and sharing, and communication. SOTI Inc offers a modified Pocket Controller (PC Enterprise) geared specifically for the latter.

Basically, if you have something on you PDA that you want others to see, Pocket Controller Professional has at least one way of doing it. If you want to demonstrate a new piece of software to a large audience, Pocket Controller Professional allows you to connect to your PC and projector wirelessly so you are free to move around the room with your PDA, while the audience observes your every move. You can also make movies of keystrokes and program operations to aid in training and instructing users; you can “Draw” on the screen to make your actions more obvious. There is a file manager program to help you move files, and a clipboard sync feature allows you to share cut and copied objects with both PC and PDA, regardless of the object’s origin. There is also a DOS-Prompt option if you care to do your work from a command line.

The feature that I find most helpful is the remote screen capture. I often review programs that, when running, reassign all of the shortcut buttons on my iPAQ 1945. This makes PDA-based screen capture impossible, and so I turn to Pocket Controller Professional for said shots.

When you are connected via Pocket Controller Professional, your PDA’s screen is visible on your PC. The screen can be wrapped in any of a large number of PDA skins, available easily and free from the SOTI website. Also, the screen can be zoomed to several sizes, from 100% to 300%. The background can also be selected: Choose from no background (see your desktop) a solid colors, or HTLM coded page design. This allows for a very personalized presentation environment easily tailored to your specific needs. The PDA screen image can be rotated from portrait to landscape, and the buttons on PDA skins, when clicked, will perform as expected.

HELP SUPPORT

Should you have questions about Pocket Controller Pro’s operation and features, the SOTI.net FAQ website is very helpful.

OPTIONS

Pocket Controller Enterprise shares all of Pocket Controller Pro’s functions, with a few extras to make managing several devices at the same time easy.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

size=2>Pocket Controller Pro requires Windows 95/98/NT/Me/2000/XP and ActiveSync 3.7 or later.

BUGS AND WISHES

When connected, Pocket Controller Pro’s PDA screenshot refreshes rather slowly. While the file management system is talked up a bit on the website, it really offers nothing more than the ActiveSync and Windows’ “My Computer” equivalents. Also, I would love to see a Macintosh version.

PURCHASING

Pocket Controller Professional is available from the pocketnow.com store for $26.99 from the pocketnow.com Store.

PROS

  • Great utilities

  • Great interface options

  • Can be tailored to any presentation need

CONS

  • Slow screen refresh rate

  • Only for Windows

OVERALL
IMPRESSION

Having already been well acquainted with Pocket Controller Pro from use on previous reviews, it was easy for me to write this review. I had already come to appreciate many of PCPro’s functions, and through this review I got to know the rest. Pocket Controller Professional is a great program for all kinds of PDA-related presentations and demonstrations. And with a 5-Star Handango.com user rating, you can’t go wrong.
