INTRODUCTION

Performance material is nothing new these days, but how you can use it is changing constantly. SCOTTeVEST continues to try and bring new technology enabled clothing to the world, and in this review, we are covering their Performance Pullover (1/4 zip). Can it really keep you comfortable during times of heavy activity? Will it be just another performance T-shirt or a real useful pullover with which you can also carry gadgets? Read on for our review!

AT A GLANCE

Made of 100% polyester with a "Cool Comfort" treatment, the SeV Performance Pullover does a remarkable job of keeping you cool and comfortable during your activities. The 1/4 zip allows for a mock turtleneck to open collar view, and the neck area is devoid of tags, thus reducing friction. You can currently purchase this shirt in black, olive, or, as seen above, smoke colors.

The back of the shirt is relatively unadorned save a small SeV logo just below the collar.

On the upper left side of the shirt, we find our first pocket. Note the small SeV logo on the very thick and easy to grab zipper pull.

Inside the upper pocket is a single Personal Area Network port. You can also see in the example above one of the two headphone/cable loops that are connected just inside the collar area.

Here you can see the Plantronics Pulsar 260 (review here), pulled slightly out of the pocket to show opening size and length. All the zippers on the SeV Performance Pullover move smoothly, and stay in the position they are placed.

On the lower right side (just above the hip) of the Performance Pullover, we find a larger zippered pocket with a unique interior layout.

The interior of this pocket is split into two sub-areas, each with their own Personal Area Network ports. Which essentially adds another pocket to the mix.

The sleeves are cuffed are fit a little loosely. And, while this is not really the fault of SeV, I felt as if arm length was a little on the short side. I blame this on my usual body proportions – I seldomly find long sleeve shirts that fit once, let alone after the first wash. Thankfully, the Performance Pullover does not shrink.

Zipped or unzipped, the SeV Performance Pullover looks very sleek. I did find the neck area to be a tad tight, but rarely wore the shirt in that fashion.

As with the new Performance Polo (review here), the upper pocket doesn’t allow for larger gadgets. They will fit, but with a noticeable bulge. Smaller gear (iPod Nano or Plantronics Pulsar 260) fits nicely. The headphone loops are inconspicuous, but quite useful. The same can be said for the side pocket, save that larger gadgets fit without any fuss, if only the weight management system was better – things just seem to hang oddly. Sadly, nothing can be done about one’s chest hair if you don’t decide to zip up appropriately (my apologies).

I personally prefer the smoke (gray) color to black, but the black version does hide the sweat almost completely. The stitching style does allow for any non-black fabric to catch at these edges, thus making it look like it is pilling, when it is not. My suggestion if you have the black variation: wash it with really dark colors.

THE DRAWING BOARD

The first request I have, in any long sleeve situation is, well, longer sleeves. The problem is, my body size is actually a large, but in order to get sleeves that fit, I usually have to get an XL. These sleeves still feel a tad short on my long arms. Next up is a rework of the weight management system. When using heavier gadgets, the shirt would hang on my shoulders a little strangely. Not enough to cause discomfort, but enough that I noticed it. I did run into a flaw on this shirt, and must note the SeV policy is outstanding in this regard. To quote Scott: "we arrange a return/refund/exchange for any customers, not just editors, without any questions, costs, or hassle." Outstanding.
