WHAT’S HOT

Among the ProBackup 128MB’s several capabilities, the ease with which it can backup and restore your device certainly stands out. I’ve never used backup software that was easier than this.. and I’m pretty sure you haven’t either. The end result is a quick and effective backup device with room for spare storage.

SETUP

Does that say setup?! Nawww.. Just pop the ProBackup
card into your device and the backup program launches immediately. You’re
a click away from backing up or restoring your device. …I told you,
this is easy.

PRODUCT FEATURES

The first time you insert the ProBackup 128MB card into your device, you’ll see this screen:

Tap the Backup Device button and you’re on your way. Do you wish to backup the system?, ProBackup will inquire. Yes. Another small dialog will remind you to close open applications and refrain from using the device or removing the card during backup. Easy enough. Another tap, OK, and your device is backed up completely and relatively quickly.

ProBackup seemed to perform a complete backup a bit sooner than the iPAQ Backup software that came with my device does. Furthermore, iPAQ Backup takes several seconds to load. With ProBackup the backup process starts and finishes quickly. Now that’s nice.

At this point I’m sure you’ve guessed that restoring your device is as easy as backing it up. You would be correct. A few quick taps and your system is restored according to your last backup. When you’re finished ProBackup will ask you kindly to soft reset your device.

I really like the way Proporta’s ProBackup manages your system’s backup files. If you’ve used your device only sparingly since your last backup, ProBackup will skip those files that haven’t changed and only backup those areas of your device that need to be updated. I did a complete backup, added a few calendar items, and ran ProBackup once again. The second time through took about twenty seconds. Only a few files and my Appointments Database were backed up. Of course, they were added to the previously backed up files to make one complete backup, ready to be restored at any time.

HELP SUPPORT

Alright, I’ll read to you the instructions printed on the Proporta ProBackup packaging:

To BACKUP Your Data:

Insert the ProBackup card into the memory slot of your handheld in the normal way. ProBackup will start automatically. Hit the BACKUP button on your screen, when the on-screen progress bar is full, your handheld is fully backed up.

To RESTORE your data from a previous BACKUP:

Insert the ProBackup card into the memory slot. ProBackup will start automatically. Hit the RESTORE button on your screen. When the on-screen progress bar is full, your handheld has been fully restored to its previous state.

There you have it. What is written above is all the help you get and, frankly, all you need.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Proporta’s ProBackup MultiMedia card supports all PALM and Pocket PC devices that have SD/MMC card slots. How’s that for compatible?!

BUGS AND WISHES

I’m sorry guys but I have no bugs to report and no wishes to proclaim. This device provides a complete backup solution for your handheld and it does the job as well as it can be done. This product is too simple and effective to leave room for wishes. The lack of backup options caught me off guard at first. But after witnessing the ease and quickness with which the program backed up my device, I’m happy to leave the options up to ProBackup. Complete backups, quick and easy. What more can I say? That the price tag is a little steep? Yes, I could say that..

PURCHASING

The Proporta ProBackup 128MB MultiMedia Card can be purchased directly from Proporta by clicking here. Its $71.95 price tag is sure to remind you that this is more than a simple 128MB MultiMedia Card.

PROS

  • Backing up and restoring your device couldn’t be easier!

  • ProBackup application is automatically launched upon inserting the card–no installation necessary

  • Unused space on the 128MB card can be used as a typical storage card

  • Uses incremental backup (only files that have changed since your last backup are processed)

CONS

  • A bit pricey

OVERALL
IMPRESSION

Did I mention that Proporta’s ProBackup is easy to use? Well, it is. Its beyond easy. This is stuff your mom could use. At the same time its both quick and effective. The 128MB ProBackup card accomplishes all of the tasks it set out to do with flying colors but at $70 more financially cautious users may want to look at other options.
