Pocket PC Techs’ WriteSHIELD C2

WHAT’S HOT

The WriteSHIELD C2 line has the most clarity I’ve
ever seen in screen protectors. Just look at the example above. On the
left is the WriteSHIELD C2 (with it’s protective film still attached),
and on the right is another screen protector that we have reviewed in
the past.
Quite a noticeable difference.

FEATURES

First, let’s review the WriteSHIELD C2 features
(copied verbatim from Pocket
PC Techs
):

   Included with the WriteSHIELD
C2 kit is two WriteSHIELD™ screen protectors, two Klear Screen
Wet Single packs, 3.25" horse-hair brush, three applicator/removal
picks, Optical quality MicroFiber cloth and fully illustrated instructions.

INSTALLATION

   Here’s
my original screen protector, ready to be uninstalled using the
included C2 removal picks.

   Here
I am using the horsehair brush to wipe any dust and/or lint to the
edges of the screen.

   Next is the wet wipe
stage using a Klear Screen Wet Single. The Deluxe
C2 kit comes with a bottle of Klear Screen (for $10 more). So you
get one wipe per protector. One could possibly save these by sealing
them in ziplock baggies – but I’m unsure how long they would last
before drying out. Personally, I would have preferred that they
included 4 or 5 much smaller wipes (as I really only used one corner
for the entire device).

   After
the wet wipe phase, you take the included "Optical quality
MicroFiber cloth" (eyeglass cleaning cloth) and wipe down the
screen, making sure to clear off any remaining lint or dust.

All cleaned and ready
for the C2 installation.

The next step is to
remove the protective film from the C2 WriteSHIELD. The film is
there to keep the protector from becoming damage prematurely due
to adverse shipping or storage conditions.

   Slightly
bending back the backing from the C2 protector, I line up the top
of the device and begin installing the WriteSHIELD. I must note
that this was the easiest screen protector installation that I’ve
ever done. Lined it up perfectly the first time.

   Here
we have the installed product. Although you can’t really see it
very well from the examples above, there are slight bubbles around
the edges (especially the corners). No bubbles in the center at
all. This may be due to the fact that the protector is made from
such a stiff material the the corners and edges don’t stick properly,
but even after a week I was unable to push those bubbles down. I
called Pocket
PC Techs
about this issue, but hadn’t heard anything back at
the time of this review.

   Yes,
these screen protectors produce a lot of glare. Really no way around
it, you either go for anti-glare and reduce clarity, or you go for
clarity and have glare. To combat the glare, I’ve noticed that I’ve
just been holding the iPAQ a little differently in my hand (thus
throwing the reflection to the ceiling rather than into my face).

A little over a week
later, with some very
heavy
use,
the screen protector is covered with bits of lint, dust and fingerprints.
No scratches. At all. So I decided to try a remove and clean.

   I
ended up bending two of the picks beyond use before I finally got
the last one to slip under the protector. I gently washed the protector
under water and used the cleaning cloth to gently dry it. Alas,
although there isn’t any adhesive on these, they still attracted
lint from the cleaning cloth. So on to Pocket
PC Techs
‘ cleaning tip.

   Using several overlapping
layers of Scotch tape, I covered the back of the WriteSHIELD. Then,
I lifted the first layer up and back, thus removing all the tape
(along with the lint and dust). I then reapplied the C2 to my iPAQ.

As you can see from
the example above, the tape did leave a little residue behind, but
once the iPAQ was turned on, I couldn’t see any noticeable difference.

I
only have a couple items on my wishlist:

    • Include
more and/or smaller Klear Screen wipes (so you don’t waste as
      much)
    • Design
and include some sort of cleaner for the back of the protector
(rather than having the customer use Scotch tape which is prone
      to leaving residue).
    • Make
the picks a little stronger and give more of them in a package

OVERALL IMPRESSION

I must say that I’ve been very impressed
with this new line of screen protectors. The clarity, as I’ve
mentioned before, is amazing. Rather than feeling like you have
to give something up in order to be protected, you can enjoy your
screen with little to no loss of brightness or color. The glare
is a minor issue (can’t have everything) – and I would rather
deal with the occasional flash in the face for the benefits provided.
The only big issue is the bubbles on the sides and corners, but
thankfully these don’t seem to allow extra dust or lint under
the protector. And the price is more than competitive for what
is included. So the next time you are looking for a screen protector
replacement (you are using screen protection, right?), I think
the choice is pretty clear: Pocket
PC Techs’
WriteSHIELD C2.
