PhatWare's PhatPad

By: John Pope | Date: 26-Oct-04 | Comments

PhatPad 1.0 gave users the opportunity to handwrite notes and even sketch ideas, but it was constrained to the Pocket PC. With its new release PhatWare has pushed PhatPad from a nice note taking application to an indispensable tool for any serious PDA user.

WHAT'S HOT

The new version of PhatPad improves note taking on the PDA through several great advances such as the ability to sketch over a background image, seamless integration with other applications, and a customizable pop-up toolbar. PhatPad 2.0 also includes a full featured companion desktop application for easy synching to the desktop.

SETUP

Setup for PhatPad is quite simple. Both the PDA and desktop versions are downloaded as a single executable file. Installation is done through Active Sync. The desktop application is easily installed automatically via install shield when you start the installation process.

PROGRAM FEATURES

Getting started with PhatPad is easy. There is practically no learning curve with the program, just start the application and pickup the stylus. With PhatWare's Digital Ink technology, writing on the screen gives a flowing smooth feel very similar to writing on paper. Notes can be created in two modes, handwriting or drawing. In handwriting mode notes can be converted to text via PhatPad's integration with either Calligrapher on the Pocket PC or PenOffice on the desktop. Notes can be adjusted in size from standard screen size up to a whopping 1584x2448. The ability to zoom and auto scroll enables highly detailed notes or markups that port well to the desktop. Zooming can be controlled through the tools menu or by pressing up and down on the d-pad. Horizontal and vertical grids are also available through the tool menu to keep your notes neat and straight.

Background Images in PhatPad 2.0

The most dramatic new feature of PhatPad 2.0 is the ability to add a background image or color to your notes. Images can be added for decoration or to actually provide a means of marking up a photo. For jobs such as realtors, claim adjusters, or even graphic designers this offers a flexibility that makes using PhatPad an invaluable asset.
