Celeris’ Virtual Pool Mobile v1.02

Legacy | June 21, 2004 10:41 PM

WHAT’S
HOT

There are three modes of gameplay, and six different
games to choose from (6 ball, 8 ball, 9 ball, 10 ball, rotation, or
straight).  Virtual Pool Mobile is so fun to play that it is sometimes
hard to remember that it is more than just a pool game…it’s a pool
simulator.  What’s the difference?  The shots you take in
Virtual Pool Mobile take realistic paths.  The game physics are
true to life.  So much in fact that the developers claim that Virtual
Pool Mobile will help to improve your pool game.

SETUP

Virtual Pool Mobile was easy to setup.  Follow
the prompts and the game should install without any problems.

PROGRAM
FEATURES

Upon launching Virtual Pool Mobile you will
come across two splash screens before reaching the main screen.

Once the main screen is reached you will be presented with a few options.
These options include three modes of gameplay, as well as options to
load a game, adjust settings, find out about the game, and access to
the help menus.

One of the features that I really liked about Virtual Pool Mobile is
that it can be played with different backgrounds, or you can choose
to disable the background entirely and focus only on the pool table.
I found playing without a background was less distracting.

Game options can be accessed during game play by tapping the question
mark on the top right corner of the screen.  The options available
once the question mark is tapped are different depending on which mode
you are playing, but generally they are settings, save game, resign,
access help or quit match.

On the top left hand side of the screen you will see a couple of names.
Your name is on top, while the name of your opponent is below.
To the right of the names is information about the match.  It will
display how many games have been won out of how many games are in the
match.

On the bottom of the screen you will see controls that will help you
play the game.  From left to right they are move ball, aim/shoot,
zoom, move view, and rotate view.  "Move Ball" will allow
you to place the cue ball anywhere on the table.  The "aim/shoot"
button will allow you to adjust the angle of your shot and to shoot
the cue once you’re ready.  The "zoom", "move view",
and "rotate view" buttons adjust how you, the player, sees
the pool table.  Some other buttons that are available at the bottom
of the screen, but are not pictured above, are replay and undo.
Choosing "replay" will replay the last shot, "undo"
will undo the shot.  The undo option is available in quick play
mode when you are not playing an opponent.

Quick play is a good way to practice the game without having to worry
about the consequences of losing.  As you can see in the picture
above, there are many options for you to customize the game to your
liking.

In career play you begin by adding a new user.

When adding a new career, type in your nickname,
choose which game you want to play, and then choose your skill level.
Skill levels range from easy, medium, hard, and good luck.

Once you have selected the career you want to play, you will come to
a screen showing the location where you will be playing.  Then
on another screen, you can choose who you want to play.

In tournament mode you have the options to choose the type of game you
would like to play, the location of the game, the match length (default
is three), the field size (the amount of people in the tournament),
the field strength (your opponents skill level), and whether or not
to have a handicap.  Once you have finished your selections hit
"Rack ‘Em", and you will be presented with the tournament
tree.  Hit "continue" to start the tournament.

HELP
SUPPORT

Help can be sought by visiting the Celeris
website or accessing it in the game.  The in-game help support
is really in-depth.  You can find information on how to play Virtual
Pool Mobile and how to play any of the six games.

Once you select "Help" from the main menu, you will be provided
with five help topics.  These topics are controls, game rules,
quick play, career mode, and tournament mode.  Choosing "controls"
will offer you help on aiming, shooting, putting english on your shot,
the cue angle, and button processes.  Choosing "game rules"
will show you the rules for all six games in Virtual Pool Mobile.
Choosing "quick play", "career mode", or "tournament
play" will give you a quick run down on how each of these game
modes are played.

OPTIONS

Settings can be accessed from the main screen
or while in gameplay by tapping the question mark.

Choosing "settings" will provide you with many options to
customize the game.

SYSTEM
REQUIREMENTS

    Virtual Pool Mobile’s minimum requirements
are a Pocket PC running an Intel Strong Arm 200mhz processor.
The game also requires 12MB storage and 5MB memory.

BUGS
AND WISHES

I really liked the game, but there are a
couple of wishes I have for future releases.  I found that using
my stylus damaged my screen protector really quick, so I would like
to be able to shoot the cue using a hardware button or at least have
the option built into the game.  The power of the shot could be
associated with the amount of time you hold the hardware button down.

I would also like to see more flexibility in the career mode.
Rather than having to start a new career in order play a different game,
I would like to be able to play any game within a single career.
I think that would reflect real life a bit more.
