Bluetake’s Bluetooth Printing Solution: BT007X+BT210 Combo

DickieAdams | October 19, 2004 12:00 AM

WHAT’S HOT

The fact that I can fire off a print job from
my Pocket PC (or other BT-enabled computer) from practically wherever
I am in the house is great.

IN THE BOX

The Bluetake BT007X+BT210
Combo box.

In the box (software)
is two CDs (one for the BT007X and one for the BT210), quick guides,
installation manuals. Hardware wise, there is the BT210 (and it’s power
adapter), plus the BT007X USB BT adapter.

FEATURES

First, let’s review the combo features:

BT210 Printer
Adapter (Specifications can be found here)

BT007X USB Adapter (Specifications

HELP SUPPORT

    Along with the included documentation
and manuals (pdf and preprinted), Bluetake also has support link,
contact page, FAQs, and driver downloads (although with the drivers
you have to fill out a form and then a username/password is sent
to you via email – not very user friendly). Phone support was excellent.
They not only helped out with a XP SP2 questions, but confirmed
my fears that my main all-in-one was incompatible with the BT210.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

    size=2>As mentioned before,
the most important requirement is a compatible
printer
. This list is supposed to be updated as new printers
become available, but at the time of this review, the 960c was
not listed. Other than that, you really only need an open USB
port.

BUGS AND WISHES

I
found no fatal errors, and my wishlist is short:

    • Add compatibility for all-in-one
      units
    • Add
      a USB pass-through port
    • Remove
      username/password requirements for drivers (Bluetake
      website
      )
    • Include
a cover for the end of the BT007X
    • Update
compatible printer list (it is missing the hp 960c, the printer
used for this review, for example)

PURCHASING

You
can buy the BT007X+BT210 Combo from mobileplanet.
The price shown is $89.95 (the lowest price I could find at the
time of this review.

PROS

  • Easy to configure

  • Great range

  • Includes both the printer
adapter and a USB adapter for your PC/laptop

  • No loss of features
    when using wireless

CONS

  • Does not support all-in-one
    printers
  • No USB pass-through
    port

OVERALL IMPRESSION

When I first started this review, I anticipated
that the BT210 might be more of a novelty than a day-to-day useable
device. But after the easy configuration and flawless printing,
my mind started to think of new ways that this sort of device
could be used in a commercial setting. For example, in a small
warehouse, one could set a printer out by the check-in window
and fire off routing slips from inside an office. And for only
$90, it is cheaper than a chunk of CAT5 and a JetDirect box. Especially
when you consider that it comes with the BT007X, a USB BT adapter.
So, if you are looking for a wireless printing solution in these
heady days of quick printing, the BT007X+BT210 Combo might just
be what you need.
