Scrolling By Tilting

Innoventions is shipping development kits for their RotoView technology. Simply put, this allows you to scroll and zoom by tilting your device. Think of this as a virtual scroll wheel. You can use hand gestures to move in and out of Navigation Mode. While in Navigation Mode, tilting the device will scroll you around a larger window or zoom in and out on an area.

Innoventions says that a Compact Flash version of the RotoView module is being developed for the Pocket PC. The picture gives an idea of what this looks like, but would this be something you’d like? I think this would be useful for small movements, but larger movements might cause problems. For example, scrolling through a large map would either require large tilts, which might mean you couldn’t see your screen (even small tilts can cause distortion on LCD screens), or you’d need to do a small tilt, exit Navigation Mode, tilt the device back to where you could see it, enter Naviation Mode, tilt it again, and so on.

Join the discussion and let us know how you’d like to control your Pocket PC.
