As Chuong reported, Google is licensing Exchange to for a new syncing product. What does that mean for you?
If you’re not using Exchange, you have the opportunity to get essentially free hosted Exchange service through Google, but only for your Contacts and Calendar (no email, yet). Personally, I use Gmail only for email filtering, so none of my contacts or calender items reside with Google. That said, it’s easy to import calendar and contacts into Gmail if you want to use this service to stay somewhat sync’ed up.
The setup for this is incredibly easy. Just go into ActiveSync on your device and use m.google.com as the server. Your GMail username and password is used in the next step of the setup (pictured). You can even set up Outlook to sync with Google Calendar through a third party program.
If you already using Microsoft Exchange, this won’t interest you – Windows Mobile can only connect with one Exchange server, so it’s not as if you could have two Exchange connections…one for your work (for business contacts/calendar), and one for Gmail (for personal contacts/calendar).
In the end, this latest attempt to sync multiple devices with multiple forms of data is promising, but not complete. Hopefully Google will expand Sync to email, plus allow for more seamless integration with Outlook and other programs.
