Yesterday’s discovery of the white version of Apple’s iPhone 4 in a Vodafone inventory system had us speculating that perhaps the smartphone would be released in advance of the “spring 2011” target last provided by Apple. Today there’s some more evidence in favor of an early release, as a screenshot of what are supposedly Best Buy’s internal computers shows that the white iPhone is destined to be in-stock by February 27.
Either the Best Buy or Vodafone screenshot by itself we might write off as the company just getting its systems ready for the inevitable release of phone this spring. Two of them, though, with spring still months away, makes it a little harder to dismiss as coincidence.
We’ve also got to keep in mind that the Best Buy picture, naming a specific date, has yet to be corroborated. It’s not like the image would be difficult to fake, as it uses previously-known model numbers for the white iPhone 4, and it’s a little odd that the phone would come out on a Sunday, as February 27 is. Maybe the date is odd because Best Buy is just using it like a placeholder until it gets more specific information on the handset’s release.
There’s definitely more of a sense now that the white iPhone is coming soon, but it’s been dangling like a carrot on a stick for so long that we’re a bit guarded about jumping on board with specific claims about its release. For the moment, we’ll keep looking for more confirmation, or maybe even something that disagrees with these leaks, in order to get a better picture of the phone’s beleaguered debut.
Would you be interested in a white iPhone 4 if it came out in February? What about March? Or, has its window already closed, and you’re now thinking about the iPhone 5?
