It seems that Apple relaxing its App Store policy has led to the multi-codec VLC Player making its way to the iPad, with an iPhone version forthcoming. For those unfamiliar, VLC Player is a lightweight player that’s been available for both Mac and PC and can handle a variety of different video file formats. Thus far, Apple’s iPad and iPhone has been limited to the company’s QuickTime Player, which can only handle a limited number of file formats and QuickTime does not support popular formats such as AVI or WMV. Applidium, the maker of the VLC build for the iPad promises an iPhone build soon.
