Even though the amount of malware on Apple’s iOS is rather small — that is zero and doesn’t compare to what’s going on in Google’s court — Intego, the company behind the award-winning Mac OS X anti-malware tool, has released a malware scanner for Apple iOS-powered iPhones.
The application is called VirusBarrier and is available as a purchase from the iTunes AppStore for $2.99. It promises to keep malware away by scanning common places where malware could show up — e-mail attachments, files you have on your iOS device, files on remote locations such as MobileMe and DropBox, web servers or WebDAV shares.
VirusBarrier is not a memory resident application in the most common sense of a malware detector. It will not scan anything unless instructed to do so and, even if there’s no malware known to affect iOS devices as of yet, your iPhone can easily transport infected files from a place like e-mail of MobileMe to your personal computer.
